IMPROVEMENT IN LANTERNS.

TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:-
Be it known that I, ELIAM BOORSE, of the city and county of Philadelphia, and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a now and useful Improvement in Lanterns; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the nature, construction, and operation of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, which is made a part of this specification, and which represents a side elevation of a lantern embodying my invention.
.The object of myinvention isto adapt two or more of the wire guards which protect the globe or chimney to constitute springs, so as to answer the purpose of holding the chimney and its appendages upon the stand or base which encloses the oil reservoir and supports the burner.
The following description will enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to fully understand and use the same.
In the accompanying drawing,-A represents the base or stand, which is constructed. in any ofthe customary forms, encloses the oil reservoir, has the burner attached to it in the usual manner, and has a suitable configuration at top to accommodate the bottom rim of the chimney or globe B when mounted, C is the ordinary cap spring or otherwise, applied to the top of the chimney, and having attached to it in any suitable manner the upright wire guards which protect the chimney. Twooi' these guards, designated by D D, are prolonged or extended downward, and are not, like the remainder, attached to the ring or circular brace E. These guards, D D, are bent at their lower ends, so as to form latches, as shown at cl cl, and being free or unattached at their lower ends, said guards D D are adapted to be pressed toward and to springaway from the bottom of the .chimmy. a :4 represent apertures formed in the flange of the base A, for the reception of the lower ends of the guards D D, which lower ends are flattened to enable them to be more readily pressed inward and passed into or withdrawn from the apertures a a. When fairly introduced into the apertures a a, the latches d spring outward, and thereby retain the chimney and its appurtenances securely upon the base.
The above-described means for securing the chimney or globe and its adjuncts upon the base are bolicved to be at once more simple, chea'p, and eii'ective than the contrive-noes heretofore employed. The number of guards-thus made to form springs may be varied to suit the taste, and such guards may be constructed with a view to greater elasticity than is due to the metal of which they are generally made.
Having thus described my invention, the following is what I claim as new, and desire to-secure by Letters- Patent- I claim the guards D D, when adapted to constitute springs to retain the chimney or globe upon the base- A, substantially as described.
To the above specification of my invention I have signed my name this f fth day of February, 1867.
ELIAM BOORSE.
