TO ALL WHOM IT` MAY CONCERN: l
- Be it known that'I', EDWIN RUSSELL, of Naugatuck, iu the county of NewI-Iaven, and State of Connecticut, have invented` a'newlmprovement in Lamp-Tops; and I do hereby declare the following, when taken in-connection' with the vaccompanying drawings arid the letters of reference marked thereon, to be a full, clear, and
exact description ofthe same, and which said drawings constitute part of this specification, and represent, in
Fignrel, a side view of the chimney.
Figures-Zand 3, toplviews of' the bur-ner, to illustratethe operation of the invention.
Figure 4, a side view of the burner and chimney attached, and in Figure 5, a vertical central section of the same.
This invention relates t'o an improvement in the manner of securing the chimney to the burner, and consiste, rst, in forming the chimney with an annular groove around its base, and second, in a fixed and rotating hook attached to the, burner, so that when the chimney is set in its place and the rotating hook turned partially around, so as to hook in the groove in the chimney, the chimney is securely held in the burner. l
--'.l.o enable others to construct my improvement, I-will proceed to describethc same as illustrated in the accompanying drawings. i A is a commonchiiimey, around the hase ofwhiclx is formed an annular groove, a, instead ofthe projecting lip, as heretofore formed. This groove I prefer to form in the glass itself, in the process of manufacture, yet,
if preferred, a band of metal, hav`ing the groove formed in its surface, may be attached to the chimney, and thus is represented in iig. 1. This completes the rs'tpart of my invention. I v
:B1-is the cone, C the wick-tube, vand D 'the basket or top, attached to thelamp. The cone B is hinged to the basket atf,and secured by a spring, E or otherwise, all constructed inthe usual manner. .Upon one side ofthe base of the cone I form orattach a hook, d, formed so as to correspondv to the groove in the chimney, as seen in g's. 4 and 5. Upon the base of the cone I t a ring, c, having a ange upon its lower edge, over which therbase of the cone is turned, as denoted atb, tig. 5. Upon the said ring c is formed a hook or hooked flange, s, also'corresponding to the groove inthe chimney. The said hook aiA may be turned in its seat upon the hase of the cone, to any desired point around the base, and for convenience of such turning, I attach a knob, F, 'to the said hook.. I i
The operation of the two hooks to secure the chimney is as follows: Turn-the hook s to the position denoted in iig. 3; then insert the chimney as seen in g. 5,'in the usual manner for placing the chimney upon common burners, and when so set, turn the hook s to the position denoted in figs. 2 or 4,' and the chimney will he firmly attached to the burner, and so that it cannotvbe accidentally removed. To remove the chimney, return the hook s to the position denoted in iig. 3. u
Having'thus fully-describedmy invention, what'I claim as newand useful,.and desire t`o secureby Letters Patent, is I 1.` The annular groove a, formed upon or attached to the b ase of the chimney, substantially as described.' The rotating hook e, constructed and arranged to operate so as to secure the chimney tothe lamp-top,` substantially as described.
EDWIN RUSSELL.
