JOHN PHELPS, OF OWEGQNEW YORK. ASSIGNOR TO HIMSELF,
AND C. WV. MERCHANT, OF SAME PLACE.
Letters Patent No. 93,224, dated August 3, 1869.
IMPROVEMENT IN LAMPS.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and. making part 01 the same.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN PHELPS, of Owego, in the county of Tioga, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Lamp-Tops; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.
The object of this invention is to provide a simple and efficient arrangement, whereby the filling-orifices through the necks of kerosene and other lamps may be readily opened for filling, and immediately closed on the withdrawal of the nozzles ofthe cans, by a selfclosing device, which will keep the passage closed sufliciently tight to prevent danger, and which will not work loose or get out of order.
Figure 1 represents an elevation of a lamp h. ving my improvement attached, and
Figure 2 represents a horizontal sect-ion, of the same.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
I propose to employ a spring-closing band, A, secured to the neck on one side of the hole at B, and extending around the same, to cover the filling-orifice O. I prefer to make it of the same width as the neck of the lamp, and to make it thicker at the end secured to the lamp, and tapering toward the other end; and I also vprefer to arrange the ring D at the top of the neck, to project over the top of the ring.
This ring I propose to fit around the neck with great accuracy, in dies or other machinery, capable of making the parts very exact, so that when in the closed position, the end which closes the orifice will be pressed tightlyau'd accurately against the surface of the neck, surrounding the hole; and in order to prevent springing the free end too far back when opening it, I provide a stud-pin, E, projecting from the neck through a slot in the end of the spring, the said slot being so placed that the end wall thereof will arrest the movement when the space is uncovered.
F represents a stud-pin projecting from the end of the spring, by which to force the spring open by the application of the thumb of the left hand.
As a further means of insuring the close contact of the end of the spring, I provide a slight projection, G,
from the fixed end of the spring, with an inclined inner face, and I bevel the end of the spring, to wedge in between the said inclined wall of the projection and the neck. I contemplate, however, using the spring without this, if preferred.
Having thus described my invention.
I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. The combination, with the neck of alamp having a filling-orifice, G, of a spring-closing band, A, substantially as specified.
2. The combination, with the above, of the projection Gr, arranged substantially as specified.
The above specification of my invention signed by me, this 1st day of April, 1869.
JOHN PHELPS.
