" CURTIS R. STICKNEY, OF HARTFORD, CONNECTICUT.
Letters Patent No. 65,445, dated June 1867 dip: fidntth ninth] in it flgrstihttcrs 35min a mating int-t at its SW2.
TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, CURTIS R. STICKNEY, of Hartford, in the county of Hill'tfOlth'Ii-hd State of Connecticut, have invented anew and improved Match-Box and Candlestick Combined; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
Figure 1 shows a side view of the improved match-box and candlestick combined.
Figure 2 shows a top. view of the same.
Figure 3 shows a vertical section through the middle.
Figure 4 shows a horizontal section on the line in n.
Like letters in the several figures indicate like parts.
My invention consists in combininga match-box and a self-acting candlestick in a portable form, suitable to be carried in the pocket. Also in the arrangement of the parts of the candlestick, and giving to the cover of the candle-tube a form proper to receive and protect the wick of the enclosed candle.
A is the tube or case forming the match-box, which is supplied with a cover of ordinary construction, with a hinge at a, and secured when closed by a snap at Z1. Bis the candle-tube, which is constructed as follows: cl is the' outside shell, to which is attached the match-tube, and to which the cover I) is attachedhy the hinge a, and which also has a snap at c for securing the cover when closed. 0 is an inside tube, which slides into the tube d from the top. It is shown in the drawings of the same length as the tube (Z, and is held in place by its friction on d, or by a projection on its lower edge catching into a groove upon the inside of the tube d. At the top the tube e has a lip turned over on the inside to retain the candle C, and prevent its being pushed out by the spiral spring 8, provided with a cap, f, which continually presses it upward. The cover D is rounded up in the middle so as to form a receptacle for thewick when the cover is closed, preserving it in a suitable condition for relighting. The candle C is pushed up by the spring s as it is consumed, so that the top is always at the same height. When it is desired to replace the candle, the tube e is removed by inserting some convenient instrument under the lip at the top and drawing it upward out of the tube (Z, when a new candle can be inserted and the tube replaced. The roughened surface E on thcoutside of the case is placed upon one of the tubes of the outside case in such a manner, as shown in the drawings, that the other tuboservos as a guide for the match passed along its surface and prevents it from slipping oil.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is- I 1. I claim the combination of a match-box and self-acting candlestick when formed of two parallel tubes substantially as herein set forth.
2. I claim the combination of the tube e with the outside shell (Z, and the cover D, substantially as herein described and for the purpose set forth.
3. I claim the cover 1), having a receptacle for the-wick of the candle, substantially as herein described.
4. I claim the placing of the roughened surface E in such a position that one of the tubes shall serve as a guide for the match when passed over its surface, substantially as herein described.
CURTIS R. STIOKNEY.
