To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN R. SUNDEE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Buffalo, in the county of Erie and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Jewelry-Boxes, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates more particularly to boxes of the kind commonly used for brooches and other articles of jewelry, and provided with a spring catch for retaining the cover in its closed position, the cover having a spring or spring-hinge by which it is automatically opened when released by the catch.
The object of the invention is to improve the spring catch with a view of rendering it simple and compact in construction and protecting its carrying-slide from the pressure of the usual pad, or from contact with the glue on the bottom of the pad, so as to insure a free and easy action of the slide and catch.
In the accompanying drawings: Figure 1 is a perspective view of the improved box with the pad and lining omitted. Fig. 2 is a transverse section of the box with the pad in place. Fig. 8 is a longitudinal section taken centrally through the spring catch and slide.

the catch cl, which interlocks with the customary lip e of the cover. This catch is arranged at the front end of a. longitudinal slide D of which it is preferably an integral part. The slide rests upon the bottom of the box and is guided and covered by a housing F having side flanges f which are secured to said bottom by any suitable means. In the preferred construction shown in the drawings, the housing is fastened by lips g stamped in one piece with the box bottom, passing through slots in the flanges f and bent down upon the latter.

The slide is constantly urged forward to its locking position by a spring of any suitable construction. I prefer to employ for this purpose a C-shaped or how spring H of wire having its ends secured to the boxbottom and the inner portion of the slide by lips a and j stamped integral with those parts, as shown. This spring lies fiat upon the bottom of the box, so as to be substantially parallel therewith. In this position, it projects but slightly above the bottom, doing away with a filling strip or other device between the pad and the box-bottom, as required in some boxes of this kind.
70 indicates the push-button of the catch, the stem of which passes through an opening in the front wall of the box and is screwed or otherwise secured to the shank of the catch, so that upon pressing the button, the slide is pushed inward against the resistance of the spring, releasing the cover.
The housing F forms not only a guide which prevents rocking or twisting of the slide and lateral displacement of the catch, but also serves to keep the slide out of contact with the glued bottom of the pad, or, if the pad is simply forced into the box, the housing protects it from the pressure of the pad, thus effectually guarding against binding of the slide and insuring a free and easy action of the catch.
I do not wish to claim in this application the construction of the cover-opening spring O herein shown, as the same forms the subject of another application filed by me May 15, 1909, Serial No. 496,305.
I claim as my invention:
1. The combination of the box-body, the
