DAVID COWLEY, or ERIE, PENNSYLVANIA.
Letters Patent No. 110,117, dated December 13, 187i).
IMPROVEMENT lN CAR-AXLE-BOX COVERS.
The Schedule referred to these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
ing had to the accompanyingdrawing and to the-letters of reference marked thereon.
The object of my invention is to provide a car-axle oil-box with a cover that shall fit closely and firmly over the oil-box, and that shall be capable of being easily removed when it is necessaryto make an entrance into the box.
In order to enable persons skilled in the art of constructing car-axle boxes to more closely con'iprehend myinrention, I shall refer to the accompanying draw-' ing, in which Figure 1' shows a perspective view of a car-axle oilbox with one of my covers attached.
Figure 2 is a sectional view of that portion of a caraxle box to which my cover is attached, and also of the cover itself.
Figure 3 shows vertical sectional \iew of the cover and its immediate surroundings.
In the drawing- A represents the body of the box.
B is the cover, the form of which can be more perfectly seen in fig. 2, where it will be seen that on its under side it is constructed with extensions G and O.
The extension 0- is made to occupy or rest in the chamber I), which is formed in one side of the box.
v \Vithin the chamber 1) rests a spring, E, against which the extension of the cover presses when the cover is shut.
.The extension G is merely for the purpose of a catch to hold the cover shut.
In fig. 3 the position of the parts 0 and E is the same that they occupy when the cover is shut.
It will be seen that in order-to open the cover it must be shoved bacl; against the spring E, which is now holding the cover close against the'ot-her side of the box, and hence holding the catch G under the flange 011 the other side of the box. This, when a spring of sufficient tension is used, will be hard and almost impossible to accomplish without a properlyformed instrument, which should properly be in the form of a cant-lever with its hook grappling at the dog H. Thus the cover may be shoved back, depressing the spring 15 a sufficient distance to allow-the catch G to pass out from the flange under whichit rests, and thus opening the box.
It will be seen that this contrivance gives a boxcover that may be easily removed by the car inspector, much easier than when the cover is secured by setscrews passing through ears on the side of the box.
F is a wooden plug, which fills the hole through which the spring 19 is introduced to the chamber 1), and prevents all possibility of the spring being thrown out by any motion of, the car.
. What 1 claim as my invention is as follows:
The cover 13, in combination with the chamber D and spring E, when the same are constructed and arranged as and for the purposes set forth.
DAV-ID COWLEY.
