IMPROVEMENT IN LAMPS.

TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN-z Be it known that I, JOHN S. HULL, of Cincinnati, in the county of Hamilton, and State of Ohio, have invented an improved Lamp; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making part of this specification Figure 1 being a side view of the lamp, but having the pump-cap in section.

The improvements produced by this invention relate to the class of lamps in which the oil is forcedto the burner by the pressure of atmospheric air in the oil reservoir, and in which the flow of oil is regulated by a valve in the burner so as to gasify the oil before it issues from the burner. In these lamps the pressure air is condensed in the reservoir of the lamp by a condensing pump; and after the condensation takes place the pump is required to retain the air without leakage. No pump-valve can be made so perfect and enduring as to insure a complete retention of the air after a considerable use and wear of the pump.
To guard against the leakage of the air from this cause the first feature of my invention consists in the employment of a cap, B, which screws or otherwise fastens air-tight over the outer end A of the pump, and thus retains the air, even when the pump itself leaks; and as this cap is not subject to so much use, and its joint is packed by pressure against a packing surface, as at a, it will be seen that this furnishes a complete security against leakage. When the pump is to be used the cap is taken off, and, after the replenishment ofthe reservoir with air it is screwed onagain. At the same time it isnct designed to dispense with a tightly-working pump.
The second feature of my invention consists in the arrangement of the device for operating the burnervalve 0 in the base of the lamp below the reservoir. To carry out this arrangement a valve-rorhc, reaches from the valve down through the reservoir,.where it is surrounded by a tube, D, so as to keep the oil from leaking out, and not require packing in the openings around the rod where it passes through the bottom. In the base G of the lamp is located a shaft, g, having an eccentric-pin or cam, f, which works in a slot, d, at the lower end of the valve-rod. By turning the shaft g the valve C is adjusted. The shaft projects out at one side of the lamp-base, and has a knob, H, or its equivalent, outside, by which to turn it. i
I do not confine myself to any special construction of the operative parts as herein described.
The advantage of this arrangement is that the top ofthe lamp, being relieved of the adjusting device, can be made more'compact and neater in appearance. It is also more convenient, in some cases, to adjust the valve at the bottom of the lamp.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

I also claim the extension of the valve-rod through the lamp reservoir, and the arrangement of the valveadjusting device connected therewith, in the base of the lamp, as herein set forth.
