IMPROVEMENT IN LAMPS.
' Edge flgrtuh were tn in flgttt Eaters Extent mm mating and of flge smut.
TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, JAMES LEE,.of the city, county,.and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Lamps; andI do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable those skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which Figure 1 is a vertical section of my improved lamp. v
Figure 2 is a detail sectional view of the'same, taken through the line a a, fig. 1.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
My invention has for its object to furnish an improved lamp, so constructed and arranged as'to guard against explosion by preventing the undue heating of the upper part of the oil-reservoir, and at the same time to guard against the lamps being broken should it accidentally fall; and it consists in the combination of a wooden case with the oil-reservoir; in the interposition of a wooden connection between the neck of the oilreservoir and the cap to which the burner is attached; in forming air-passages in the neck of the lamp, leading bcneath the cap from the ezgternal air to the interior of the oil-reservoir; and in the combination of an adjust- -able or extensionpedesta'l with the wooden lamp-case, the whole being constructed and arranged as hereinafter more fully described A is the oil-reservoir, which I prefer to make comparatively shallow and broad, so that the oil, when partially exhausted, may not have so far to pass up the wick as it has in lamps constructed in the ordinary manner. B is a wooden case, which is made of sucha size that the reservoir A may fit loosely into it, as shown in fig. 1, so that the air may circulate freely around the said reservoir, the air enteringthrough the holes 6 in the bottom of the case B. The neck a of the oil-reservoir fits closely in and may be secured to the neck 6'' of the top or cover of the case B. G is the cap, which. fits upon and is secured to the outer side of the neck b of the cover of the case B, so that a wooden connection may be interposed between the cap 0 and the neck a of the oil-reservoir A, thus preventing the upper part of the oil-reservoir from becoming heated. Air-passages Dare formed in the wooden neck 6, leading beneath the cap 0 into the interior of the oil-reservoir, so that the air may pass in to supply the place of the burned oil, without having to find its way down through the burner. E is an ordinary burner, which is attached to the cap C in the ordinary manner. F G is the adjustable or exten sion pedestal, which is made in twd parts, F and G. The part or standard F is made cylindricalirx form, and fits into a vertical hole formed in the part G of the pedestal, and is held at any desired elevation by the springs 3, attached to the lower part of the part F, and which press against the inner-sides of the part G, as shown in figs. 1 and 2. The part F is kept from being accidentally drawn out of the part G by the stop 9, secured in the upper part of the vertical hole in the part G, as shown in fig. 1.
I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. The combination of the wooden case B with the oil-reservoir A, substantially as herein shown and described,
and for the purpose set forth.
p 2. The interposition of a wooden connection, b between theneck a of the oil-reservoir A and the cap ,0, substantially as herein shown and described, and'for the purpose setforth.
3. Forming air-passages D in the neck of the lamp, leading beneath the cap ,0 from the external air tothe interior of the oil-reservoir A, substantially as herein shown and described, and for the purpose set forth. i
4. The adjustable extension-pedestal, formed by the combination'of the parts F and G, springs f, and stop g with each other, and with the case B, substantially in the manner herein shown and described, and for the I purpose set forth.
The above specification of my invention signed by me this 23d day of May, 1867.
JAMES" LEE.
