Description
P; J. CLARK;
I Lantern.
N0.v 9.2.515. Patented July 13 1869.
ggmc (twine,
P. .l. CLARK, OF WEST MERIDEN CONNECTICUT.
Letters Patent No. 92,515, dated ul s, 1869.
IMPROVEMENT IN LANTERNS.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
To all whom it may concern Be it known'that I, P. J. CLARK, of West Men'den, in the county of New Haven, and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Lanterns; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the .same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, forming part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 represents a side elevation of 'my improvement in lanterns.
Figure 2 is a detail perspective view of the upper parts of the guard-wires.-
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts. 7 2 his invention relates to a new manner of securing the canopy or cap of a lantern to the guards of the same, in such a manner that it can readily be taken off and put on, and that when put on it will be securely fastened.
The invention consists in making the guard-wires in pairs, and in connecting the upper ends of each pair by across-piece, which, at its'junction with the guardwires, forms a catch, to which a hook projecting from the canopy can be locked.
A, in the drawing, represents the cap, or canopy of lantern.
on it are formed twoor. more suitable hooks, or catches a a, which are to secure it to the guards.'
The guard-wires B B are in pairs, each pair made of one piece, whose ends are fastened to the base oi the lantern, while, on top, the uprights of each pair are connected by a horizontal piece, I), as shown.
This cross-bar, or connection 11 forms part of a pair of guard-wires, and may be curved to accommodate itself to the shape of the globe C. v
The cross-bar a projects inward from the guardwires, so that a shoulder, c, is formed on the latter, as
is clearly shown in fig. 2.
The hooks, or catches a of the canopy catch under these shoulders c, to fasten the canopy to the lantern. The shoulders 0 may be notched on the under side, to still better retain and accommodate the hooks.
The bail D has eyes formed on its ends, to fit into eyes 11, that are formed on two of the guard-wires, as shown.
Having thus described my invention,
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by'Letters Patent, is
Theguard-wires of the lantern, when formed in pairs, each pair being composed of one wire, bent at the centre b,'to form shoulders c, to which the cap or canopy is secured, by means of the hooks a, fitting under said shoulders, whereby the pairs of guards are adapted to be expanded to accommodate lantern globes of different diameters, as herein set forth and shown.
. P. J. CLARK.
