To all whom it mar concern.-
Be it known that I, LEWIS .J; ATWOOD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Waterbury, inthe county of New Haven and State v of Connecticut, have invented an Improvement in Lamp-Collars, of which-the following is a specification.
Metal lamp collarshave been connected with the glass fountain in various ways, but
usually by means of plaster of paris. In some instances however the metal collar has been indented to pass into recesses in the glass, andin other instances the collar has been screwed upon the glass and indented.
In these difierent modes of connection the.
glass is liable to be injured and it is difficult to insure theproper fitting of the metal collar and the. glass together, because while the metal collars are uniform in size and shape the glass frequently varies in consequence of becoming bent or distorted in the handling or subsequent annealing.
In my present improvements I provide upon the metal collar and upon the glass of the lamp reservoir neck interlocking projections that serve to prevent the rotation'of thelamp collar upon the reservoir, and in addition to these interlocking projections the metal of the lower edge of the collar is pressed into a groove or recess in the glass of the lamp, so that by the two instrumentalities the lamp collar is held firmly upon the glass.
In the drawings, Figure l is an elevation representing the upper part of a lamp reservoir. Fig. 2 is a-section of the collar. Fig. 3 is an inverted plan of the same. Fig. 4 is a partial sectional plan at the line 00 a), Fig. 1, and Fig. 5 is a vertical section at one side of the collar and reservoir neck.
Upon the collar A there are suitable inward projections 2 which are preferably in the form of teeth or corrugations, and upon the neck B of the glass reservoir 0 there are similar recesses or corrugations, so that the projections upon the metal of the lamp collar interlock with the recesses upon the glass neck '13 as the metal collar is slipped down over the glass neck. These interlocking projections and recesses prevent the rotation of the metal collar upon the lamp reservoir, so
that the burner can be screwed or unscrewed 1 from the collar without risk of rotating the collar upon the glass, and in order to hold-the collar down upon the neck of the reservoir I "turn inwardly the lower edge of the metal collar into a suitable recess or recesses in the glass. Usually it is preferable to provide an annular groove 3 around the neck and to press the lower edge of the metal'of the collar into such recess by a suitable tool, so thatthe parts interlock and the metal collar is held firmly upon theneck of the glass reservoir.
If desired, plaster of paris or similar adhesive material may be used in addition to the interlocking projections herein referred to.
. I claim as my invention 1. The vitrified lamp reservoir having an upwardly projecting neck with substantially vertical indentations on the outside, open 'at the top, in combination with a sheet metal collar around the neck and having inward projections fitting into the indentations, and means for holding the collar down around the neck substantially as specified. 2. The combination with the vitrified lamp reservoir having a neck with vertical indentations-on the outside, of a collar having corresponding projections or corrugations to in L. J. ATWOOD.
