PATEN TED SEPT. 11

LAMP. APPLICATION FILED JAN. 29, 190e.

' UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
Application filed January 29,1906. Serial No. 298,421.
T0 at whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, MARY E. B. LANE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Mount Healthy, in the county of Hamilton and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lamps; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to improvements in oil-lamps and burners therefor, and more par ticularly to the means for attaching the burners to the bodies or fonts of the lamps.
The object of the invention is to provide-a connection or fastening of this character which will be simple in construction, durable in use, convenient and efiicient in operation,
and comparatively inexpensive to manufacture.
With the above and other objects in view the invention consists of certain novel features of construction, combination, and arrangement of parts, as will be hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 1s a side elevation of an oil-lamp constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view through the same. Fig. 3 is a bottom plan view of the burner.
, Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the neck of the lamp-body, and Fig. 5 is a detail view of a slightly-modified form of the invention.
Referring to the drawings by numeral, 1 denotes the body or font of the lamp, which maybe of any suitable form and construction, but which is preferably made of glass and has a cylindrical neck 2, formed at its upper edge with serrations or notches 3, and an annular series of apertures or openings 4, as clearly shown in Figs. 2 and 4 of the drawings. The lamp 5 may be of any desired form and con struction, my improvements upon it consisting in providing it with an extended Wicktube 6 and a surrounding outer tube 7. As
- shown in Fig. 2 of the drawings, these inner and outer concentric tubes are formed integral with the base of the burner 5, the inner tube or wick-tube 6 being adapted to project into the neck 2 of the lamp-body and the outer tube 7 being adapted to surround the outer side of said neck, as shown. Suitable apertures or openings 8 are formed adjacent to the top of the outer tube 7, and similar Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 11,1906;
openings 9 are formed in the base-plate 10 of the burner, so as to afford the proper ventilation to the lamp-body and prevent the accu mulation of gases in the same. The notches and openings 3 4 in the neck 2 of the lam are also provided for this purpose; but it wi 1 be understood that either one or the other may be dispensed with, if desired. When the neck 2 has the notches 3 at its upper edge, the lamp-body Wlll have sufficient ventilation through them; but when the said upper edge of the neck is smooth and the base 10 of the burner is not perforated and rests upon the same the openings 4 in the neck are necessary. The openings 9 in the burner-base 10 may be omitted in some cases, but are necessary when the burner is applied to a lamp-body which has its neck neither perforated nor notched, as shown in Fig. 4. When the openings 9 are provided, it will be seen that the burner may be used upon any bottle or other container having a neck which will fit between the tubes 67 By constructing the burner in this manner poor people are enabled to supply themselves with lamps by simply purchasing the burners and wicks and applying them to any bottles that they may have at hand.
In Fig. 5 of the drawings I show a burner of the-usual form, which has the tube 6 adjustably secured upon it by a slotandpin connection 12 and the outer tube 7 secured upon it by solder or any other suitable means. When the tube 7 is thus adjustably attached to the wick-tube of the burner, the latter may be adjusted for use upon bottles of difierent sizes.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the construction, use, and advantages of the invention will be readily understood without requiring a more extended explanation.
Various changes in the form, proportion, and the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the prin ciple or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention as defined by the appended claim. I
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
In combination with a vessel having a neck provided with openings for the escape of gases therefrom, a burner having a diaphragm to bear on said neck, a wick-tube depending In testimony whereof I have hereunto set from said diaphragm to extend through said my hand in presence of two subscribing witneck to hold the burner in place thereon, and nesses.
a depending outer flange to form a chamber MARY E. B. LANE. 5 around the neck and provided With openings Witnesses:
for the escape of gases. substantially as de-- H. V. SMITH,
scribed. D. J. SMITH.
