FILLING NIPPLE AND CAP.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 544,409, dated August 13, 1895.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOSEPH JAUOH, of Meriden, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented a new Improvement in Filling Nipples and Caps; and I do hereby declare the following, when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings and the letters of reference markedthereon,
to be a full, clear, and exact description of.

My invention relates to an improvement in filling nipples and caps for lamp-founts of the type in which the filling-cap instead of being furnished with a screw-thread taking into corresponding threads in the nipple is swung as 0 upon a pivot, and held down in place by means of a spring, the object being to produce a simple, compact, convenient, and effective construction designed with particular reference to the locking of the cap against rotation and 5 to suggesting to the user of the lamp how the cap is to be manipulated.
With these ends in view my invention consists in the combination, with a lamp-fount, of a nipple mounted therein, a non-cylindrical 4o cap adapted to be inserted into the said nip.- ple and constructed to be non-rotatable therein, a shaft securedto one side of the center of the cap at a right angle to the plane thereof and extending downward through the nipple,
a spring applied to the lower end of the shaft for drawing the cap downward, and a bearing for the shaft.
My invention further consists in certain details of construction, as will be hereinafter described, and pointed out in the claims.
As herein shown I employ an oval cap con its own form.
sisting of a body A and an overhanging very slightly-rounded top A, and an oval nipple B corresponding to the form of the cap and very slightly larger in internal diameter than the external diameter of the body thereof and mounted in the top 0 of the lamp-fount. I do not, however, limit myself to the use of an oval cap and nipple, as any other noncylindrical form might be chosen, the requirements of my invention being satisfied by the selection of a form which will prevent the cap from being rotated in the nipple. The cap is provided at one of its ends with a small vertical shaft 0 arranged at a right angle to it and passed downward through the nipple at one end thereof. Various devices may be resorted to for affording a bearingwithin thefount for the lower end of the said shaft. As shown in Figs. 3, 4, and 5 of the drawings, it has hearing and vertical movement in two vertically-perforated laterally-arranged bearing lugs or flanges D D, located at the upper and lower ends of a vertically-arranged elongated slot D, formed in a concavo-convex bearingarm D formed integral with and depending perpendicularly from the nipple B. A spiral spring E, encircling the said shaft and interposed between the upper lug D and a collar D rigidly mounted on the shaft, exerts a con stant eflort to pull the same downward. The long slot D aifords clearance for the spring, though this. is not essential, as the spring might be arranged so as not to require clearance.
It will be readily understood from the foregoing description that when the cap is in place in the nipple it is locked against rotation therein by reason of the form thereof and To open the cap for the pur- 9o pose of filling the lamp it must therefore be grasped and lifted in line with the nipple until its body clears the upper edge thereof, after which it maybe swung around, as upon a pivot,into its fullopen position. Then after 5 the lamp-fount has been filled it is swung back until its body coincides with the nipple, when the spring will at once draw it downward thereinto and lock it in place. What I wish to call attention to is that the cap is not only locked against rotation by reason of its form, but that it at once suggests to any one who has anything to do with the lamp that it cannot be removed by rotation, but must be lifted and swung to one side. It therefore takes the place of a printed direction or oral instruction on this point.
It is apparent that in carrying out my in 'vention some changes from the form and construction herein shown and described may be made, and I would therefore have it understood that I do not limit myself to such form and construction, but hold myself at liberty to make such changes and alterations as fairly fall within the spirit and scope of my invention. Thus, instead of supporting the shaft of the cap in a bearing-arm formed integral with the nipple, I may employ for the purpose such a construction, for instance, as shown in Fig. 6, which shows an independently-formed bracket E, secured to the lower edge of the nipple by soldering, or otherwise and having two vertically-perforated bearing-flanges E E through which the shaft passes. By preference this bracket is reinforced by a brace F arranged diagonally between its lower end and the lamp-fount.
I am aware, however, that, as stated at the outset of this description, non-rotatable swinging filling-caps are old, and I do not, therefore, claim such broadly.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The combination with a lamp-fount, of a non-cylindrical nipple mounted therein, a non-cylindrical cap conforming in shape to the shape of the nipple and held against rotation by its shape and the shape of the nipple, a shaft secured to the cap at one side of the center thereof and at a right angle to the plane thereof, and extending downward through the nipple, a spring applied to the lower end of the shaft for drawing the same downward, and a bearing within the fount for the shaft, substantially as described.
2. The combination with a lamp-fount, of an oval nipple mounted therein, an oval cap conforming in shape to the shape of the nip ple, but smallerin external diameter than the internal diameter of the nipple, a shaft secured to one end of the cap, and passing downward through one end of the nipple, a spring applied to the shaft for drawing it downward, and a hearing within the fount for the said shaft, substantially as described.
3. The combination with a lamp-fount, of a non cylindrical nipple mounted therein, a non-cylindrical cap conforming in shape to the shape of the nipple and held against rotation by its shape and the shape of the nipple, a shaft secured to the cap at one side of the center thereof, and at a right angle to the plane thereof, and extending downward through the nipple, a spring applied to the lower end of the shaft for drawing the same downward, and a bearing for the said shaft, consisting of a perpendicularly arranged arm formed integral with the nipple, and provided with lugs or flanges through which the shaft passes, and in which it is free to move vertically, substantially as described.
