Be it known that I, FRANCIS O. DEWEY, of Reading, in the county of Middlesex and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain Improvements inWick-Scrapin g Attachments for Lanterns, of which the following is a specification.

This invention has for its object to provide means whereby the crust which forms on the wicks of lantern-lamps may be removed without separating the lamp from the lantern, thus obviating the danger of fire which exists when a lantern-lamp is removed from the lantern.

The invention consists in an arm pivoted upon the wick-adjusting ratchet-rod of the burner, and formed so that when oscillated on said rod it will pass back and forth across the upper end of the wick and scrape off any crust that may be on the same, a crank or operating device being provided at the outer end of the ratchet-rod, whereby the scrapingarm may be oscillated, said operating device being outside of the lantern, all of which I will now proceed to describe and claim.

In the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, Figure 1 represents a side view, partly in section, of a lantern provided with my improvements. Figs. 2 and 3 represent top views of the lamp removed from the lantern, showing the wick-scraping attachment in different positions.

The same letters of reference indicate the same parts in all the figures.

In the drawings, (t represents a lanternlamp, b the wick-tube, and c the rod that operates the wick-adjusting ratchets, said rod having the usual thumb-piece, c, at its outer end.

(1 represents a sleeve adapted to rotate on the rod 0, and provided at its inner end with an arm, e, which is so formed that when the sleeve is turned on the rod 0 the part 2 of said arm will move across the upper end of the wick, said part being provided with V-shaped serrations, as shown in Fig. 1, which scrape off any crust that may have collected on the wick. The part 2 is arranged to occupy a diagonal position when crossing the wick, as shown in Fig. 2, so that it will not bearon all parts of the end of the wick at once, and will in crossing the wick. sleeve d is provided with an operating arm or handle, f, having a suitable thumb-piece, whereby the sleeve (1 and wick-scraping arm may be oscillated.

The lantern shown in the drawings is composed of a lamp-holder, 3, closed at the bottom, a wire frame-work, 4, rigidly secured to the holder 3, a top, 5, hinged at 6 to the framework, and secured thereto by a detachable fastening device at 7, and a glass or globe, 8, which rests on the holder 3 and is detachable not therefore be liable to extinguish the flame The outer end of the therefrom. The lamp can only be removed by unfastening and turning back the top 5 and removing the globe, the lamp being then free, so that it can be lifted from the holder through the frame-work l. This construction guards against accident from the falling of the lamp from the lantern, which sometimes occurs when the lantern is open at the bottom, and the lamp is inserted by being pushed upwardly into the lantern and secured by catches. It will be seen that the location of thesleeve d on the ratchet-rod enables a single slot, 8, to.

serve both for the ratchet-rod and the wicklantern or other lamp may be variously modified. If preferred, the operating-handle f may be a thumb-wheel of circular form, like that on theratchet-rod, instead of a crank.

I am aware that an extinguishing device has been mounted on the ratchet-rod of alampi burner, as shown in Patent No. 159,621.

I am also aware that an arm journaled in the barrier of a lamp and adapted to be oscillated so as to'serape the upper end of the wick-tube is not new, the device being jOUlDZLlQd in the sides of the burner, and not on the ratchet-rod.

I am also aware that the application of a Wick-scraping arm toa lantern lamp-burner and the provision of an operating device for said arm outside of the lantern are not new hence I do not claim the same broadly.

I claim 1. Alantern having a lamp-holder provided with a slot, 3, and a lamp having a ratchetrod passing through said slot, combined with a- Wick-scraping attachment composed of a sleeve mounted on the ratchetiod, a scraping arm at the inner end of the sleeve within the lamp-holder, and an operating device or handle outside of the lamp-holder, the slot 8 serving for the passage of the ratrhet-rod and the sleeve of the scraping attachment, as set forth.

2. The improved1amp-\vicl;-sciaping attachment composed of a loose sleeve mounted on the ratchet-rod of the 1a1np, a scraping-arm, e, at the inner end of said sleeve, and an opcrating-handle at the outer end of said sleeve, as set forth.

3. The combination, with a lamp-burner, of the wick-scraping arm journaled on the ratchet-rod of the burner, and provided with V- shaped serrations arranged to act on the wick, as set forth.
