AUTOMATIC LANTERN-REGULATOR.
Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ERNEST CHARLES Ivns, a citizen of the United States, residing at 608 Rice street, Pueblo, Colorado, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Automatic Lantern-Regulators, of which the following is a specification.
My inventlon relates to an automatic lantern regulator, and the objects of my invention are to provide a means for adjusting automatically the flame of a lantern when the same is set down so that the flame will be turned down and less oil used, and on picking up the lantern the flame is restored to the size to which the wick was first adjusted; and also a means of throwing out of operation the automatic adjustment. I attain these objects by the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which,

A slot 18 is made in the top of one of the supports 13 of the lantern through which one end of the bail 1A operates and the bail is extended so that a portion thereof extends on the inside of the support 13 and engages pivotally in the hole 11 of the horizontal arm 10. The rod 9 is attached to the arm 10 and extends downwardly to a point below the globe of the lantern and is held by loop 19. A ferrule 1 is constructed to exactly fit over the wick holder 12 and is provided with the elements 3 on each of the flat sides through which operate the fingers 2. The fingers 2 are attached to the lever 4. The other end of lever A is attached pivotally to the lower end of the rod 9, at 8. A fulcrum is attached to the base of the lantern composed of the horizontal attaching parts 7, the upright parts 6, and at the top the loop 5 is'formed with one side open, in which the lever 4 operates, thus making a fulcrum for lever 4 in either upward or downward movement of the rod 9. The loop 5 is so formed as to make a spring means of retainlng lever 41: therein. A pivoting element 15 is attached beneath the slot 18 in which is pivotally attached the pawl 16 having the tooth 17.
It will thus be seen that a lantern provided with my device when carried in the hand lifts the rod 9 and thereby forces the flame adjuster 1 down into proper position on the wick holder 12 so that the full amount of flame for which the wick is adjusted is used, and when the lantern is not held by the bail 14 there is a downward movement of the rod 9 which forces up the flame adjuster 1 so as to give the same result as if the wick were turned down, because it reduces the flame. By means of the pawl 16 being pushed in under the bail 14 the flame adjusting device is thrown out of operation and the lantern when set down on its base burns with the usual flame. By means of my device the flame is automatically reduced when the lantern is not carried by the bail thus making a great saving in the use of oil in lanterns and at the same time affording a means of instantaneous use of the full flame without adjustment of the wick, or, by use of the pawl, the automatic reduction may be avoided.
I claim In an automatic lantern regulator of the character described, a slot in one of the supports of a lantern, one end of the bail of the lantern extended through said slot, a rod connected with the said extended end of said bail, a lever connected with said rod, a fulcrum engaging said lever in upward and downward movements, a ferrule fitting the wick holder at the flame end of the wick attached to said lever, a pawl means for throwing out of operation the said extended end of said bail, all substantially as described.
