LAMP BURNER.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 359,122, dated March 8, 1887.

To all whom it may concern.-

Beitknown that I, FRANCIs ROBERT BAKER, a subject of the Queen of Great Britain, residing at Arcade Chambers, Snow Hill, Birming ham, England,haveinvented Improvementsin the Raising and Lowering of Lamp-Galleries, (for which I have applied for Letters Patent in Great Britain, dated September 13, 1886, and numbered 11,595,) of which the following In is a specification. v

This invention relates to that class of lamps in which the gallery or globe-holder is supported and carried by rods depending from the under side of the said holder, and which said rods slide freely within vertical guideholes or tubes situated in the middle of the fixed burner part of the lamp and the object of my said invention is to facilitate the raising and lowering of the said galleries or globeholders, for the trimming of the wick or wicks, the refilling of the oil-reservoir,and the ligl1ting of the lamp and my improvements consist, essentially, in the provision of novel means for raising and lowering lamp galleries I of the kind described.

Figure 1 represents in longitudinal vertical section a portion of a lamp or a lamp-burner provided with improvements constructed according to my inventiomwith the gallery and 0 burner part represented in their lowered positions. Fig. 2 represents the same with the cone or burner part and gallery raised from the wicks or burner-body for the lighting of the lamp,or for the trimming of the said wicks,

or the relilliug of theoil-reservoir through the body of the burner. Fig. 3 is a side elevation of a portion of the burner-body.

a is the body of the burner of the lamp, which is of the ordinary construction, and b is the gallery, and c the cone combined with and moving with the gallery, and upon the under side of which said gallery and cone a guide-rod, d, (upon one side,) is conducted and passes through the body of the lamp. The

other side of the lamp is provided with aloop, 6, having an eye, 6', sliding over a fixed condueting-rod,f.

g is a chain or flexible cord attached at its lower end to the guide or guide-rod (I, while the upper end of the said chain or flexible cord is attached to the short arm 71.2 of a lifter, h, which turns about a pin or center, 2', as a fulcrum, which is supported by a bracket, j. The bearing If of the lifter is slightly elougated to admit of the lifter slightly rising and.

falling on the affixing of the gallery in its raised position, as represented in Fig.3. The extreme end of the said short arm h is made with the shoulder h, which drops upon the edge a of the body of the burner a, thereby affixing the gallery in its raised position. k are the wick-tubes, through which the wicks Z pass.

To raise the gallery and burner b c, in order to gain access to the wick, depress the long end of the lifter h, when the chain or flexible cord attached to the short arm pulls up the rod d and with it the gallery and cone, and when the said gallery is in its fully-raised position and the lifter liberated, the shoulder h of the short arm 71 drops upon the top edge, a, of the burner-body, which thereby-holds the gallery in its raised position, the rising and falling being allowed for in consequence of the bearing being elongated.

To lower the gallery, pull outward the lifter, when the catch end is liberated by forcibly drawing the shoulder over the top edge of the burner, and when thus liberated the parts resume their normal positions by gravity.

Having thus described ulyinvention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. The combination, with the burner-body a and combined gallery and burner c b, of the gallery lifting mechanism comprising the chain 9, lever h, and movable guide-rod d, substantially as described.

2. The combination, with the burner-body a and combined burner and galleryb c, of the guide-rod d, chain g,and lever h, provided with the elongated slot h", fulcrunrpin 1;, and shoulder h, substantially as described.
