CORPORATION.
TUBULAR LANTERN.
Patented Aug. 13, 1912. Serial No. 486,798.
To all 'whom t may concern.'
Be it known that I, FREDERICK Dir/rz, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Tubular Lanterns, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to the devices which are employed for raising and lowering the globe in the lantern frame and which comprise a transverse shaft supported on the tubes and provided at one end with a hand lever by which the shaft is manipulated, and a catch or guide plate which is secured to the tube adjacent to the lifting lever and with which the latter engages for holding or locking the globe either in its normal position on the burner or in a raised position above the burner.
The object of the invention is to render this style of globe lifting mechanism simple in construction and convenient and durable in use.
In the accompanying drawings: Figure 1 isa rear elevation of a lantern embodying this invention. Fig. 2 is a fragmentary sectional elevation in line 2-2, Fig. 1, looking outward. Fig. 3 is a horizontal section in line 3 3, Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is aperspective View of the catch plate. Fig. 5 is a rear elevation of the lower portion of a lantern embodying the invention in a modified form.
Like reference characters refer to like parts in the several figures.
A represents the base portion of the lantern containing the oil pot 10, air chamber 11 and burner 12, B the side tubes and C the central tube, these parts forming the rigid lantern frame.
D represents the globe.
E represents the globe plate, F the bell or canopy which is vertically movable on the central tube, G the annular spring catch secured to the bell and engaging the top of the globe, and H the side wires connecting the bell with the globe plate. These parts constitute a globe-holding or supporting frame which is vertically movable in the lantern frame toward and from the burner.
Referring to Figs. 1-4, I represents the bent or cranked transverse lifter shaft which is journaled in the lantern frame and has its offset middle portion 15 connected with the globe plate on the rear side of the lantern by a hinge or sleeve 16. This shaft is provided at one end with a lever 17 for manipulating the same. L represents the catch plate which is arranged on the inner side of one of the side tubes, adjacent to the lever 17, and is provided with an upright slot 18 in which the lever' moves and is guided. This plate is provided near its lower end with a rearwardly projecting bearing lug 19 in which the shaft is journaled. The opening or slot 2O of the lug has preferably the form of a horizontal or lateral slot which communicates with the lower end of the upright slot 18, so that the slot of the plate, composed of the upright portion 18 and the lateral portion 20, has an angular or elbow form. The lifting lever 17 connects at its lower end with a horizontal journal portion 21 which is supported in the lug, the slot 2O of the latter being closed on t-he inner side by the tube to which the catch plate is secured. This journal portion is connected with the adjacent end of the main transverse portion of the shaft by an arm 22 which is arranged on the outer side of the bearing lug 19 and extends downwardly from the journal portion in the normal position of the parts, shown in Fig. 1. At the opposite end the shaft is provided with an arm 23 and a journal portion 24 which engages in a bearing 25 of any suitable construction secured to the adjacent air tube. The angular slot in the catch plate permits the plate to be applied to the shaft after the latter has been completely formed with its lifting lever, whereby the formation of the shaft and lever is greatly simplified. The plate is secured to the tube by soldering or other suitable means after it has been applied to the lever and shaft.
The wire of which the shaft and lever are formed is somewhat elasticv and the shaft is made of such length that the lever is pressed against the outer upright side or face 26 of the slot 18 which terminates in upper and lower locking depressions 27, 28.
In the modified construction, represented in Fig. 5, the journal portion 21 of the shaft adjacent to the lever is arranged in a separate bearing 29 secured to the air tube near the lower end of the catch plate M.
I claim as my invention:
1. The combination with a tubular lantern frame and a globe support movable up and down therein, of a catch device arranged on the inner side of said lantern frame, a bearing arranged outwardly from the face of said catch device, and a transverse lifter shaft connected with said globe support, said shaft being provided with a journal portion arranged transversely in said frame and journaled in said bearing, with an arm arranged on the outer side of said journal portion and bearing and connecting said journal port-ion with the main transverse portion of said shaft, and with a hand lever arranged on the inner side of said bearing and journal portion and engaging said catch device, substantially as set forth.
2. rlhe combination with a tubular lantern frame, a globe support movable up vand down therein, and a catch device secured to the inner side of said frame, of a transverse lifter shaft connected with said globe support, bearings arranged on said frame on opposite sides of said globe support, one of said bearings being arranged adjacent to the face of said catch device, and said shaft extending outwardly beyond said last mentioned bearing and inwardly through said bearing and being provided on the inner side of said bearing with a hand lever which engages said catch device, substantially as set forth.
3. The combination with a tubular lantern frame, a globe support movable up and down therein, and a transverse lifter shaft and lever connected with said support, of a catch plate which is provided with a bearing lug projecting at an angle from said plate and with an angular slot comprising an upright portion which is arranged in said plate and a lateral portion which is arranged in said lug, substantially as set forth.
fitness my hand in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
