Description

'JOSEPH WILLIAYMS.
Candlestick.A
Inventur' UNITED STATEs PATENT QEEIOE.
IMPROVEMENT IN CANDLESTICKS.
Speci'rieation forming part of Letters Patent No. 126,765, dated May 14, 1872.
SPECIFICATION.
To all Iwhom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOSEPH WILLIAMs, of San Mateo, county of San Mateo, State of California, have invented an Improved Candlestick; and I do hereby declare the following description and accompanying drawing are sufiicient to enable any person skilled in the art or science to which it most nearly appertains, to make and use my said invention or improvements without further invention Or experinient.
i My invention relates to an extremely cheap, simple, and convenient candlestick, which has the advantage of being readily cleaned, and is capable of irmly holding candles of various sizes without the necessity OI reducing theend which lits into the socket.
In order to more fully illustrate and explain my invention, referrence is had to the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specilication, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view. Fig. 2 is a section.
A represents the tray or base of the candlestick. The standard B is simply a square or other suitably-shaped bar of metal, which is xed to the bottom of the tray a little to one side of its center. The top of the standard B is formed into a small journal, and two pinching-jaws, C O, are secured upon the journal through holes in the projecting lugs d near the middle. The jaws C are both alike, and each consists of a short metal plate or bar having one end bent in a regular curve, so that when the two are united together on the standard, and their curved ends brought together, they will form a circle, as shown. Their opposite ends are bent slightly apart'and a spiral spring, d, is held between them by lugs, so as to keep them separated. By pinching these ends together the spring will be compressed, and the curved ends of the bar be separated so as to receive the candle. E is a slide, which moves up and down along the standard B. This slide has a handle, f, inside of which is a spiral spring, which bears against the standard B, and holds it in position. G is a small platform, which extends out from the slide, and has a small sharp point, i, extending upward from its center.
The candle after being passed through the socket formed by the two. jaws, C, will rest upon this platform. The candle when thus held in the candlestick Will be directly over the center ot' the tray or dish A, and for this Object the standard B is placed to one side of the center. Y
By this means I provide a cheap and convenient candlestick, and one that can be readily cleaned When desired, and which wil hold any ordinary-sized candle.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In combination with the tray A, standard B, and pinching-arms (1,1 claim the slide E with its platform G, substantially as and for the purpose above described.
' In witness whereof I hereunto set my hand and seal.
JOSEPH WILLIAMS. [1.. 8.]
