RETAINING DEVICE FOR GARMENT-SUPPORTERS.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, EUGENE IV. HAWLEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Philadelphia, county of Philadelphia, and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Retaining Devices for Gauncut-Supporters, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.

The object of my invention is to provide a device by means of which the garments hanging in the open compartment of a wardrobe trunk may be pressed together and held against the rear wall of said compartment, in whatever position the trunk may afterward assume.

A device of similar character is set forth in a patent application filed by me August 17 1915, Serial No. 45,868, and said device is entirely feasible and practical in many forms of trunks. The present application, however, discloses an improved device which, for certain purposes, is better adapted for use in certain forms of trunks.

A preferred form of the invention is shown in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a perspective View of my invention applied to a wardrobe trunk; Fig. 2 is an enlarged perspective view of my invention; Fig. 3 is a face view of one of the supporting frames partly in section.

Supporting frame-s a and b of square tubular form are secured, opposite each other, to the inner side walls of the open compartment at of a wardrobe trunk.

Garments m are hung upon hangers a carried upon rods 0 in the compartment in the ordinary well known manner.

A cross frame 0 spans the distance between the supporting frames, and is adjustable in the direction of the length of said frames by the following means.

Both ends of the cross frame (which may be a plain strip of wood) are provided with metal projections c, which project within slots (4, Z) in the supporting frames a and b. The slots in one of these frames, say I), may be along the side only, as shown in Fig. 2, but the slots a in the other frame a, must in that case be continued up through the top of said frame, in order to allow the removal of the cross frame and its ready re-insertion in any of the slots.

from slipping out of its slot (1., I provide a locking member (Z slidably mounted upon the top slotted face of frame a, by means of slot and pin connections 0. This locking member is provided with slots d, which, in the normal position of the locking member, register with the slots in frame c, and allow of the removal or insertion of the end of the cross frame 0. Locking member (Z is held in this position, with the slot and pin connection at one extreme end of their movement, by a spring f. The forward end of the looking member is turned down to form an abutment 9. When the trunk is shut the other compartment g forms a closure for the looking device by contacting with abutment g and pressing the locking member inward against spring f. This forces slots d out of register with slot a, as shown in Fig. 8, and prevents the extension 0 of the cross frame from sliding out.

In Fig. 1 I have shown two such devices as I have described, in use in a trunk, but it is understood that one or more may be used, according to the size of the trunk or the nature of the garments to be confined.

Having now fully described my invention, what I claim and desire to protect by Letters Patent is:

1. A wardrobe trunk comprising a compartment for garments, supporting frames extending alongside the sides of the compartment, a cross frame adjustably engaging said supporting frames and adapted to be moved into and out of position to confine the garments in position in the compartment, a locking device movable independently of the cross frame and adapted to be moved into and out of position to hold the cross frame from removal from the sup porting members, and a closure for said compartment adapted when moved into closing position to effect the movement of said looking device into operative position.

2. A wardrobe trunk comprising a compartment for garments, supporting frames extending along the sides of the compartment, a cross frame adjustably engagingsaid supporting frames and adapted to confine the garments in position in the compartment, a locking device adapted to hold the cross frame from removal from the supporting members, a spring normally holding said locking device in inoperative position, and a closure hinged to said compartment and adapted when moved into closing position to move said locking device against the action of its spring into operative position;

3. A wardrobe trunk comprising a compartment for garments, supporting frames extending along the sides of the compartment, a cross frame removably and adjustably engaging said supporting frames and adapted to confine the garments in position in the compartment, and a spring-actuated locking device normally held in inoperative position but adaptedto be moved manually into position to hold the cross frame from removal from the supporting frames.

4. A wardrobe trunk comprising a compartment for garments, supporting frames extending along the sides of the compartment, a cross frame removably and adjustably engaging said supporting frames and adapted to confine the garments in position in the compartment, a locking device movably mounted on one of the supporting frames, and a spring normally-holding the locking device in inoperative position, said locking device being movable into position to hold the cross frame in any position to which it may be adjusted.

5. A wardrobe trunk comprising a compartment for garments, a cross frame, supporting frames extending along the sides of the compartment one of which is provided with slots any of which are adapted to receive an end of the cross frame, and a locking bar movable along the slotted support- 7 ing frame and provided with'slots adapted to be brought either into registry with the slots in the supporting frame to permit the entry or removal of the cross frame, or out of registry with the slots in the supporting frame to lock said end of the cross frame from withdrawal.

64A wardrobe trunk comprising a compartment vfor garments, a cross frame, supporting frames extending along the sides of the compartment one of Which is provided with slots any of which are adapted to receive an end of the cross frame, a locking bar movable along the slotted supporting frame and provided with slots adapted to be brought either into registry with the slots in the supporting frame to permit the entry or removal of the cross frame, or out of registry with the slots in the supporting frame to lock said end of the cross frame from withdrawal, 'a spring normally holding the locking bar in the first named position, and a closure hinged to said compartment and adapted when closed to push the locking bar into the last named position.

7. A wardrobe trunk comprising a compartment for garments, supporting frames extending along the sides of the compartment, and a cross frame, one of said supporting frames provided with closed vertical slots with any one of which one end of the cross frame is adapted to engage endwise,

the other of said supporting frames having vertical slots opening upwardly with any one of which the other end of the cross frame is adapted to swing into engagement, alock- 7 ing bar slidable along and over the last named supporting frame and provided with open ended horizontal slots adapted to register with the slots in the supporting frame, a spring normally holding the locking bar in said position, and a closure hinged to said compartment and adapted when closed to push the locking bar out of said position.
