ilPECII-ICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 308,959, dated December 9, 188
Application filed July 24, 1884.
To to whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, THOMAS J. FORD, of Geneva, in the county of Ashtabula and State of Ohio. have invented certain new and use- 5 ful Improvements in Pocket-l3ooks, Porte- Monnaies, or \Vallcts, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to pocket-books or wallets in which money is carried, and has for its object to provide a receptacle for holding postage'stamps, in which the liability of the stamps becoming moistened and the gum sol'tened and causing them to be stuck together is avoided.
I 5 Heretofore it has been the custom to carry postage-stamps inside of the porte-monnaie or wallet, the resultof which is that by reason of the warmth or perspiration of the person, the gum of the stamps becomes heated and moistened, so that they adhere to one another and frequently damages them so much as to render them valueless. To avoid this is the object of my invention, which I accomplish by providing a metal box or receptacle, in
combination with the clasp which secures the flap or lid of the wallet, located on the outside of the same in such a manner that the stamps contained within it cannot be affected by the heat or perspiration of the body of the person carrying it.
attached to the flap of wallet and secured by a spring-clasp made separate from the box or receptacle.
(No model.)
A in Figs. 1, 2, 3, 6, and 7 is the flap of a wallet, porte-monnaie, or satchel. These 5 have ordinarily been secured by a hinged springclasp, B. Combined with the clasp I make a metal box or receptacle, 0, designed to hold postagestamps, ashereinbefore stated. In Fig.4; said box is seen provided with a sliding lid or cover, D, having a stop-lip, c, to prevent sliding clear off. At one side of said box is attached a hinged clasp, B, be tween two ears, 6 c, and the bottom of said box is cut to form a spring, 8, against which the lower end of said clasp plays, and which holds it down either open or closed.
In the bottom of the box 0 are punched triangular lugs 72 t, which are used to secure it to the flap or side of the wallet.
In Fig. 5 the lid D is hinged to one side of the box.
In Fig. 7 is seen in section the hinged clasp 13, attached to a, spring-plate made separate from the box, which may be secured to either the (lap or side of the wallet, but working together like that shown in Fig. 4.
The top or lid of the box has a pin, 1), over which an eyelet in the flap sits in case the box is attached to the side of the wallet under the flap.
Having described my invention, I claim- 1. The metallic receptacle consisting of the box O, provided with sliding or hinged lid D, and having lugs 73 t for fastening it to the flap of a wallet, in combination with springclasp' B, substantially as described.
2. The combination, with the flap or side of a wallet, of the box or receptacle 0, and the spring'hinged clasp B, substantially in 80 the manner and for the purpose specified.
THOMAS J. FORD.
