JOHN STORY, OF CASTLE SHANNON, PENNSYLVANIA.
BOTTLE AND STOPPER.
SPECIFICATION forming To all whom it may concern;
Be it known that I, JOHN SToRY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Castle Shannon, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bottles and Stoppers, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing. l v v My invention relates to an improvement in I bottles and stoppers; andit consists in the combination of the bottle, having its lip rounded from itsuinner side upwardly and out wardly, with the stopper provided with a grooved flange, the groove being so shaped as to correspond to the shape of the lip, and theflange made to extend outward over the top of the bottle, substantially as shown.
. The object of my invention is to provide a bottle-stopper which projects out over the top of the neck of the bottle and forms a tight joint therewith, so as to prevent dust from settling on the lip of the bottle.
The accompanying drawing represents a vertical section of a bottle and its stopper, which embody my invention.
A represents a bottle, which may either be of the shape here shown or any other that may be preferred,and which is provided with either a straight ora conical neck, B. The upper edge or lip of this neck is rounded or inclined outwardly and upwardly, as shown at B. The stopper 0 has its body b made of a shape to correspond with the interior of the neck B, and is provided with the flange b, which proj ects out beyond the neck of the bottle, as shown. The extension (1 upon the top of the stopper may be entirely dispensed with,

if so preferred, as the mere shape of the stopperabove the flange is immaterial. der side of the flange is grooved, as shown, and the groove corresponds in shape to the outwardly-turned lip, so as to form a tight joint therewith. The flange projects beyond the neck of the bottle, as shown, for the purpose of forming a tight joint and preventing dust and floating particles from settling upon the lip, as is the case where the stopper is constructed-in the usual manner. By grinding the under side of b the neck of the bottle is hermetically closed by both the project- .ing part b and the part I) of the stopper, which is also ground. The interior of the neck of the bottle will also be ground, so as to correspond to the ground portion of the part b.
I am aware that the covers for jars have been made to project beyond and fit down over the top of the jar, and this I disclaim.
Having thus described my invention, I 'elaim- The combination of a bottle having the lip of its neck inclined and flared upwardly and outwardly, with the stopper provided with the grooved flange, the shape of the groove being made to correspond to the shape of the lip and the different parts of the neck, and the stopper, being ground so as to form a tight joint, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
