To all whowt it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM C. SIMPSON, residing at Strother, in the county of Monroe and State of Missouri, have invented a new and useful Fruit-Jar, of which the following is a specification.
Myinvention relates to fruit-jars; and the object thereof is to provide simple means whereby a jar is more effectively sealed than heretofore. I accomplish this object by employing a washer of peculiar construction which fits on the glass top and along the side of the jar, so as to thoroughly cover the joints made between the jar and top.
My invention consists also of certain details of novel construction, that will be here inafter more fully described, and specifically pointed out in the claim.
In order that my invention may be fully understood, I will proceed to describe the same with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a view of a jar having my invention embodied therein. Fig. 2 is a vertical section of the upper part of the jar. Fig. 3 is a detail view of the glass top, and Fig. & is a detail View of the washer which I employ.
In the said drawings, A represents the body of the jar, which may be of any shape, design, or size, and B the neck or top thereof.
0 represents the cover, which is formed convexed on its under side in order that air may be excluded from the vessel when the cover is put in place, and this cover is provided with a shoulder G, which rests against the inner edge of the top B. The top is further provided with the reduced portion D on its upper face of such depth that when the washer and metal cap are in position the upper face of the cap will be flush with the top of the cover.
E represents an annular washer, which is flanged as shownthat is, that the faces E E are at right angles to each other, so that when it is in position, as shown in Fig. 2, the face or flange E will effectively cover the joint between the cover 0 and the neck B of the jar. The diameter of the cover is the same as the exterior diameter of the neck, so as to present a smooth even surface to the washer, which extends down over the edge of the cover and onto the neck, thereby securing a perfectly airtight joint between the cover and the top of the neck.
G represents the metal cap, which is provided with the central opening and with the screw-thread G, which fits upon the screwthread B of the neck. The screw-threads B terminate at a suitable distance below the top of the neck to aiford a smooth portion for the reception of the lower edge of the flange of the washer.
The manner 'of securing the cover 0 is as follows: It is placed upon the neck B, with its shoulder O resting against the edge of the neck, and the washer E is then slipped on and the metal cap applied.
From the foregoing description it will be seen that I have provided a very simple arrangement for more effectively sealing fruitjars, so to exclude all air.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
In a fruit-jar, the combination, with a jar, the neck of which is exteriorly screw-threaded, the threads terminating at a distance from the top, of a cover on the jar of the same diameter as the smooth portion of the neck, the upper and lower surfaces of which are recessed or cut away around the edge, an annular washer within the recessed portion of the top of the cover, the edge of which is flanged and extends down over the edge of the cover and onto the smooth portion of the neck, and a cap on top of the washer, the side of which is screw-threaded and extends down over the flange of the washer and engages with the screW-threads of the neck, substantially as shown and described.
