UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JAMES MILNOR HICKS, OF SUMMIT, NEW JERSEY, ASSIGNOR TO THE AUTO STOPPER COMPANY, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
SEALING-CAP FOR VESSELS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 12, 1905.
Application filed. March 15, 1905. Serial No. 250,192.
To all whom, it 777/6107] concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES MILNOR HICKS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Summit, Union county, New J ersey,.have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sealing-Caps for Vessels, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to sealing-caps for 'vessels and to means for removing the same panying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which Figure 1 is a part longitudinal central section and part elevation of a bottle having my invention applied to it and showing a lifter in place ready to grasp the cap for removal. Fig. 2 is a bottom or reversed view of my cap as seen looking upward from the lower side thereof. Fig. 3 is a side view of the cap be- Fig. 4 shows A is the body of the bottle.
B is the exterior of the bottle-neck.
C is a bead on the exterior of the bottle-neck near its top.
D is the top surface of the bottle-sealing cap. D is a flange pendent from said top surface, but below the bead at the outer diameter of said top surface D. E is said bead.
K is a recessed portion in flange D at its top, Fig; 4c.
F is a stopper located in the mouth of the bottle below the top surface of the cap.
Gr is the handle.
H and I are the grips of a lifter by which the cap is removed.
The operation of removing the cap from the bottle after it has been locked to the bot- .tle will be readily understood.
The cap and bottle and locking means are similar to that shown in the patent to James M. Hicks, dated February 21, 1905, No. 783,038; but my present invention consists in providing a means at the top of the cap-flange of the cap by which-a lifter for removing the cap may take instead of gripping the lower part of the pendent flange. I avoid by this means the danger met with in other methods of removing the cap of breaking the bead upon the bottle-neck.
It will be seen that the flange of my cap in Fig. 3 represents it as partially finished as to ,its final shape and before the final shaping in applying it to the bottle, while Fig. 1 shows it in its final shape after its application to the bottle, having the pendent flange D curved in straining it over the bead on the bottleneck, as set out in the patent before cited.
Iam aware that a simple cup-shaped cap with bead surrounding the top surface is old. Therefore I do not claim broadly such a structure; but what I do claim is a cap provided with means at the upper part of the pendent flange of the cap by which a lifting-tool may take to remove the cap, the pendent flange having a curvilinear shape, as shown in Fig. 1.
for the same purpose and is an equivalent means to that shown in the drawings. It is illustrated in Fig. 4:. In deep caps this is the preferred form.
Having now fully described my invention and the manner in which I have embodied it, what I claim as new and as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A sheet-metal cap for a vessel, having a flat top surface, a downwardly-trendingflange, be-
neath said top surface, a circumferential flange as an extension of said flat top surface, said flat top surface and flange being of larger diameter than the said downwardly-trending flange, whereby when the said cap is on a vessel the under part of the circumferential flange is above the top of the walls of the vessel and the downwardly-trending flange grips the unname to this specification, in the presence of der side of the bead upon the vesse1neck by two subscribing Witnesses, this 1st day of 10 Virtue of the elasticity of the metal of the March, 1905.
flange, in combination With a vessel' having a a I 5 neck and a bead surrounding the neck near JAMES MILNOR the top there0f,-all arranged to operate as and Witnesses: for the purposes specified. JOHN A. HICKS,
In testimony whereof I have signed my I LINcoLN A. STUART.
