PATENT OFFICE.
WVILLIAM GRIFFIN, 0F BENNETTSVILLE, SOUTH CAROLINA.
IMPROVEMENT lN PLOWS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 28,981, dated July 3, 1860.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM GRIFFIN, of Bennettsville, in the district of Marlborough and State of Son th Carolina, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Flows; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the construction of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, making a part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 represents a perspective View of the entire plow.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my plow, 1 will proceed to describe the same with reference to the drawing.
To a stoutsubstantial beam, A, are connected the handles B B, which are braced by a rung, 0, that passes through an inclined brace or standard, D, on the rear of said beam.
The mold-board brace E is fastened to the rear of the beam and, curving downward, terminates in a point, and thusforms a seat for the curved mold-board F, said mold-board being secured to its brace by a stirrup or strap, G, that is riveted to the mold-board, embraces the mold-board brace, and has a key, H, driven in behind said brace, thus firmly uniting said brace and mold-board.
The sole or landside I is welded to or made a part of the mold-board F, the rear end of said landside being turned up, as at I, so as to be united to the lower end of a brace, J, the upper end of which is fastened to the heel of the beam by a bolt, a, which bolt may also secure the standard D and the mold-board brace E to the beam. I
At or near the central portion of the beam A is bolted one end of a brace, K, which curves downward and backward, and is bolted at b to the mold-board brace E.
Having thus fully described the construction of my plow, I would state that I am aware that a single curved brace has been used for bracing the piece E to the beam and to the sole or landside of the plow; but this only unites the parts to the beam in one place, and is not permanent enough, and I do not claim such bracing; but
What I do claim is- In connection with a mold-board and landside in one piece and united to the standard E by astrap and key, the arrangement of the two braces J K, as herei 11 described and represented, for holding the several parts to the beam, as set forth.
WM. GRIFFIN.
