ISAAC N. RANKIN, OF MIDDLETOWN, IOWA.

IMPROVEMENT IN PLOWS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 28,407, dated May 22, 1860.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, ISAAC N. RANKIN, of Middletown, in the county of Des Moines and State of Iowa, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Flows; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being bad to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, in which Figure l is a perspective view of my inven tion; Fig. 2, a horizontal section of a portion of same, taken in the line 00 00, Fig. 1.

Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the two figures.

To enable those skilled in the art to fully understand and construct my invention, I will proceed to describe it.

A represents a beam, to the back part of which handles B B are attached, said handles not extendingbelow the beams. C C are standards of metal, each of which is forked at the upper and lower end. The upper ends of the standards pass through the beam, have screwthreads on them, and nuts 06 fitted thereon. The lower parts of the standards have their front parts, I), curved corresponding to the curv ature of the mold-boards O, which are secured to said parts of the standards, and the back parts, 0, of the lower portions of the standards are curved inward from the landsides D, and are connected to traverse-bars E, which connect the landsides with the mold-boards. The outer sides of the front parts, 11, of the standards have an oblique position with theirlandsides, as shown clearly in Fig. 2, the inner sides of said parts I) being in contact with the moldboards. F F are braces which extend from the upper parts of the moldboards C to the upper part of the standards, and serve to brace the mold-boards.

The standards 0 O, in consequence of being curved inward from the landsides D D, do not comein contact with the land as the implement is drawn along, the landsides D being only in contact therewith. By this arrangement much friction is avoided and the draft of the implement correspondently diminished. I11 consequence of not having the handles B B extend below the beam A, the standards by their construction, in connection with the braces F F, permitting of such arrangement, the handles cannot, as usual, serve to catch weeds and various trash that may be in their path.

The back plo w-thatis to say, the back moldboard and landside-is somewhat below the front ones, and the latter as the implement is drawn along remove all weeds and trash and prepare the way for the back plow, which throws up the subsoil, the front plow turning down stubble, weeds, and manure, while the back plow completely covers the same with the subsoil and favors their decomposition to nourish the crop to be grown.

I do not claim the employment or use of two plows attached to a single beam, one plow being lower than the other, for such device has been previously used; but
