Description

' UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN A. PARLETT AND JEREMIAH THOMPSON, OF ELMIRA, NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN PLOWS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 31,903, dated April 2, 1861.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, JOHN A. PARLET'I and JEREMIAHTHOMPSON, ofElmira, in the county which the screw is effected, secures an easier draft and a more perfect turning of the sward; the coupling-hart], by being susceptible of contraction or expansion, enables the plowman to graduate the width of the furrow as the nature of the soil may j ustify. Theanchorate drawback F, by allowing a sweep of one foot for the forward end of the clevis, enables him to turn the plow to the right or the left, and thereby plow up to fences or fruit-tret s. The shoe H under the landside secures the increased durability of the landside and uprights.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use our invention, we will proceed to describe its construction and operation.
We construct our plows of iron, except the beam A and handles G, as seen at Figure 1 in the accompanying drawings.
The landside and uprights are made whole, as seen at Fig. 2.
The shoe isa plain piece ofiron of the length of the landside I), with a flange on one side of it, as seen at Fig. 3.
The point E or share is constructed with an opening in the rear to admit the point of the main upright, and is fastened with a wooden pin, a, as seen at Fig. 2.
The mold-board is made two feet and ten inches long, and fastens with a bolt at the front end, as seen at letter a, Fig. 2, and at the rear end bolts to the extension coupling-bar, as seen at letter 0, Fig. 1, and covers the joint between thepoint and main upright, which see at Fig. 5. Said coupling-bar is made of two flat pieces of-iron. the one with a groove through the middle and the other with a tongue to fit it, and is bolted together with one bolt having two extra holes, that it may be shortened or elongated-at the discretion ot' the plowmau, which seeat Fig. 6. This bar, by being attached to mold-board and upright, as seen atletter b, Fig. 2, and atletterc, in Fig. l, graduates the width of the furrow. In order to widen the plow by extending said bar it is necessary to loosen the bolt in the fore end of the moldboa'rd.
The anchor-a te draw-head is cast hollow, and is open in front and on one side of the socket, which goes ontotheend ot' the beam. Itextends each way from the beam about six iuches,forn1- ing a segment of a circle, which is described by the long clevis d as it is swayed over it to the right or left, and is punctured with holes in front in order to set the cleris at any desirable point, which see at letter din Fig. l.
Whatwe claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The arrangement of mold-board B, landside I), coupling-bar 0, shoe or sole H, point E, beam A, anchorate drawback F, clevis d, and handles G, the Whole being constructed in the manner and for the purpose described.
JOHN A. PARLE'IT. JEREMIAH THOMPSON.
