Description
E. B. CLARK Shovel-Plow.
Patented Feb. 14, 1860.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ELIJAH B. CLARK, OF TALLAHASSEE, FLORIDA.
IMPRQVEMENT IN PLOWS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent N0. 27,109, dated February 14, 1860.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ELIJAH B. CLARK, of Tallahassee, in the county of Leon and State of Florida, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Flows; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming apart of this specification, in which- Figure 1 represents a perspective view of my improved shovel-plow, showing clearly the construction of the same. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section of the braces and shovel, the upper portion of the braces being cut off.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both figures.
The object of my invention is to obtain a light and substantial standard for the singleshovel cultivator or shovel-plow, and to give greater strength to the parts and facility for attaching and detaching the shovel and ad justing the same, than has been yet obtained.
To enable those skilled in the art to fully understand and construct my invention, I will proceed to describe it.
Figure l of the drawings represents the complete plow, A being an ordinary beam or stick, and B the handles of the same.
0 O are flat plates, forming the standard, which are bolted to the plow-beam A at a a, and cross each other so as to form diagonal braces. A bolt, 0, serves to secure the plates together at their intersection, and a longitudinal bar, D, connects the two extreme ends of the braces G 0 together. The brace O is composed of two bars, with the brace 0 passin gbetweeu them. These bars are bolted on each side of the front end of the longitudinal bar D, and between these two plates 0 passes a' projection, d, which is cast with and projects from the back of shovel E, as shown by Fig. 2, and has a hole through its end, into which is driven a wedge-key, e, for securing the shovel to the standard. A pin, f, which. projects from the bar D, passes through the shovel-plate, and this, in connection with the fastening on the upper end of the shovel, secures the shovel to the plates 0 and keeps it in a fixed and steady position. The edges of these plates U are curved, so that the shovel will have a firm support. By perforating the upper ends of the diagonal brace 0 it can be set so as to raise or lower the heel of bar D, and thus alter the set of the plow. These plates forming the standard can be made of quite thin wrought-iron and possess lightness, and at the same time great strength, as there will be no lateral strain upon any of the bars.
What I claim as myinvention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- The arrangement of the longitudinal bar D, shovel E, double brace 0, double brace 0, bolt 0, projection d, beam A, and handles B, as and for the purpose herein set forth and described.
ELIJAH B. CLARK.
