Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OEEICE.
E. D. LEE AND Z. W. LEE, OF BLAKELY, GEORGIA.
IM PROVEM ENT IN PLOWS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 25,6511, dated October 4, 1859.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that we, E. D. LEE and Z. W. LEE, both of Blakely, in the county of Early, State of Georgia, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Plows; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to theannexed drawings, makinga part of this specification, in which Figure l is a perspective view of our invention. Fig. 2 is a section ofthe same, taken in the line m a', Fig. 1.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts inthe two gures.
To enable those skilled inthe art to fully understand and construct our invention, we will proceed to describe it.
A represents the plow-beam 5 B B, handles attached thereto; O, an inclined bar attached to the back part of the beam and having the cross-bar et ot' the handles B passing through it, said bar O serving as a support to the handles.
To the under side of the beam A an inclined metal bar, D, is attached by a bolt, b, which passes through a ange, e, formed on the up per end of bur D, said flange iitting snugly against the beam and having a lip, d, at each side, which extends up by the sides of the beam and serves to aid in retaining the bn' D in proper position.
To the front side of the barD a curved rod, E, is attached. This rod E extends upward and passes through the beam A,and has a nut, e,on it, a screw-thread being cut on the upper end of the rod to receive the nut. The curved rod E, it will'be seen, serves as a brace for the bar D.
To the lower end of the barD,which is technically termed the footf the share F is attached. This share is of shovel form, and its upper end has a shank,f, formed on it, leaving a shoulder, g, at each side.-
On the foot D and around the shankf of the share a metal band, G, is placed, and a metal wedge or key, H, is driven through the band G at the back side of the foot. Near the lower end of the foot D there is a pin or projection,
h, which tits in a hole orrecess in the back side of the share, (see Fig. 2,) a plurality of holes being made in the back of the share in order that the same may be adjusted higher or lower on the foot, as may be desired. The band G and'wedge or key H, in connection with the pin or projection h, firmly retain or secure the share to the foot, and by knocking out the wedge or key H the share may be readily detached anda new one adjusted to the foot with the greatest facility.
Through the front part of the beam A a series of holes, fi, are made horizontally, through either of which the bolt or pinj of a hook, I, passes and secures said hook to the beam.
This hook is the clevis to which the draft-gear,
is attached. The clevis is simply a hook provided with a forked shank in which the beam lits, the shank being secured to the beam by the pin and the back of the hook bearing against the under side of the front part of the beam, as plainly shown in Fig. 1. The holes are formed iu a horizontal line in the beam, so that the clevis maybe adjusted to the beam nearer to or farther from its end, as may be desired, und thereby regulate the depth of the furrow by causing the line of draft to be more or less inclined. The farther back the clevis is adjusted tothe beam the greater inclination the line of draft will have, and consequently the greater the tendency of the draft to draw the share upward as well as forward. A sha1- low furrow will therefore be made. This tendency of the line of draft diminishes and the furrows are made deeper as the clevis is moved forward and adjusted near the end of the beam.
I-Iaving described our improvement, we claim- The arrangement of the peculiar curved clevis I, beam A, curved rod E, bar D, band G, wedge H, shankj', projection h, and share F, as herein specified, for the purpose set forth.
E. D. LEE. Z. W. LEE. Witnesses:
