CQSMETIC KIT Filed Feb. 12, 1954 IN V EN TOR. GERAL D/IVE BOURBON A TTOR/VEYS United States Patent COSMETIC KIT Geraldine Bourdon, San Diego, Calif.
Application February 12, 1954, Serial No. 409,872
' 2 Claims. 01. 132-83) The present invention relates to a cosmetic kit.
One of the objects of the present invention is to provide a cosmetic kit which is provided with a plurality of cosmetic containers or elements, each having a cover, and of which several or all of the covers may be lifted simultaneously.
Another object of the present invention is to provide for lifting several or all of the covers simultaneously by the opening of the lid for the kit.
Further objects and advantages will be apparent from the following description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings wherein preferred embodiments of the invention are illustrated.
In the drawings:
Fig. 1 is a top plan view of the cosmetic kit showing the lid swung to open position, part of the lid being broken away;
Fig. 2 is a sectional view taken on line 22 of Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 is a fragmentary view of part of the actuating mechanism, for example the actuating mechanism for the cover of the cigarette case; and
Fig. 4 is a fragmentary view similar to Fig. 2 showing an aspect of the present invention in which the covers are operated independently of the lid for the kit.
Referring in detail to the drawings, the cosmetic kit 25) includes a box 21. The box includes a bottom wall 23, an upright front wall 24, an upright rear wall 25, side walls 26 and 27, and a top wall 28. The top wall is suitably carried by battens 29 secured to several of the upright walls. All of these walls cooperate to provide a chamber 30. A lid 32 is hinged at 33 to the top of the rear wall 25 of the box. The lid can be held in closed position by a suitable type of latch 34. The underside of the top wall or lid carries a mirror 36.
Any suitable type of cosmetic elements or containers may be employed and, for illustrative purposes, I have shown a cigarette case 37, a powder compact 38, a rouge container 39, a mascara case 40, and a container for lip rouge 41. Each of these elements is provided with a cover indicated respectively at 43, 44, 45, 46, and 47. Each of these elements is carried on the top side of wall 28 of the box 21. The containers 37, 38, 39, and 40 are fastened to the top wall 28 in any suitable manner. A recess 50 is formed in the top wall 48 which receives the lip rouge container 41, and this container 41 can be lifted bodily off of the wall 28.
To complete the cosmetic kit, I have shown an eyebrow pencil 52 and a perfume bottle 53. These elements 52 and 53 are yieldingly held in position by spring clips 54. Each of the covers 43 to 46 inclusive is hinged to the top wall 28 through its respective container; such hinge is shown at 56, and each of these lids has a rearwardly extending portion 57 carrying a pin 58. The hinge 56 for the cover 47 is carried by a bracket 59.
The major portion of the mechanism for swinging the covers is contained within the box 21. The mechanism Within the box includes two horizontally extending beams,
2,303,841 Patented Oct. 8, 1957 one of which is shown at 61. These beams lie adjacent to the side Walls 26 and 27. These beams are arranged to be shifted vertically and are connected with one another by a rear rod 62 and a front rod 63. Connecting rods 65 connect the beams 61 with the pivot pins 58. Thus, when the beams 61 are moved downwardly, the rear ends of 57 of the covers will be pulled downwardly to open the containers. Obviously, when the beams 61 are shifted upwardly, the covers are closed.
Any suitable type of camming mechanism may be employed for shifting the beams 61. As is herein shown, each of the beams is provided with a slot 64 having an arcuate portion and a dwell portion 66. Roller 69, one for each slot, extends into the slot 64. Each of said rollers is carried by a lever 70. Lever 70 is pivotally mounted to one of the side walls of the box on a pin 71. Each of the pins 71 extends inwardly into the box and each of the levers 70 is arranged along the inside of a side wall of the box 21.
As shown in Fig. 2, the levers 70 are at their rearmost position when the levers 70 are pulled forwardly.
The rollers 69 will first move through the arcuate portions of the slot 80 and then after the lever is moved beyond its vertical position, the rollers 69 will rotate in the dwell portion 66 of the slot 64, and on further movement of the levers forwardly, the rollers 69 bearing on the top wall of the dwell portion 66 of the slot will cam the beams 61 upwardly. The upward movement of the beams 61 will swing the covers 43 to 47 inclusive to closed position simultaneously.
If desirable, the levers 70 may be actuated by movement of the lid 32. This is accomplished by pivotally connecting the ends of levers 70 to links 73, as at 74. The ends of links 73, opposite the pivot 74, are connected by pivots 75 to the cover 32. By pulling forwardly on either of the levers 70 or on links 73, the cover 32 will be pulled toward closed position. I have shown the position of the levers and beams, in dotted lines, in which the lid is partly closed.
Also if desirable, the covers 43 to 47 inclusive may be actuated simultaneously independently of the cover 32. This aspect of the invention is shown in Fig. 4. In this embodiment, I prefer to connect the two levers 170 with one another within the interior of the box whereby either one of the levers may be used to shift both beams 61. To accomplish this, the lower end of the levers 170 are connected with one another by a rod 171, and this rod carries both rollers 169.
If it is desirable to provide for independent swinging of any of the covers yet maintain simultaneous closing of all of the covers, I provide for such by utilizing the top of connecting rod, as shown at in Fig. 3. This connecting rod 165 is formed of resilient material which will yield to slight pressure. The upper end of the connecting rod 165 is provided with a reverse bend portion 77 having a hump 78. Portion 77 will yield when downward pressure is impressed upon the pin 58 whereby, by lifting the cover for example the cover 43 of the cigarette case 37the portion 77 will yield sufficiently to permit such operation. Likewise, the pin 58 will move upwardly beyond the hump upon closing of the cover 43. The tension, say of the portion 77, is such that it will yieldingly hold the pin 58 in its socket 78 when the connecting rod 165 is being actuated by the beams 61.
I prefer to have the uppermost portions of all of the covers 43 to 47 inclusive lie within the same horizontal plane when they are closed, whereby when the lid 32 is closed the mirror 36 will lie in substantial abutting relationship with these covers, so as to prevent any rattling of these covers and the actuating parts therefor.
In the instant embodiment, the connecting rods 65,.
3 or 165, for the covers 43, 44, and 45 are all connected to rear rod 62, and the connecting rods 65, or 165, for the covers 46 and 47 are connected to the front rods 63.
Thus, by the present invention, I have provided a cosmetic kit in which the covers for all the containers or cosmetic elements can be actuated simultaneously or individually if desired and, also, all of these covers can be simultaneously actuated by merely swinging back the lid of the kit.
While the forms of mechanism herein shown and described constitute preferred forms, it is to be understood that other forms may be adopted falling within the scope of the claims that follow.
I claim:
1. A cosmetic kit or the like comprising a box having a bottom wall, upwardly extending side walls and a top wall, said top wall being spaced from the bottom wall and cooperating with the bottom and side walls to form a substantially closed compartment, said top Wall being adapted to carry a plurality of cosmetic elements on the top side thereof in spaced horizontal relationship; separate covers, each adapted to completely cover one of the cosmetic elements; hinges for the covers, one for each of the covers; separate connecting rods, connected with each of the covers for moving the covers about the hinges therefor, said connecting rods being horizontally spaced from one another and extending through the top wall and into said compartment; vertically movable mechanism in said compartment and connected with said connecting rods for moving each of said connecting rods vertically; a lid for the box; means hingedly connecting the lid with one of said side walls, said lid being adapted to cover said top Wall and the cosmetic elements carried thereby when the lid is in closed position; and means operatively connecting the said mechanism in the compartment with the lid for raising and lowering said mechanism upon, respectively, lowering and raising of said lid. 2. A cosmetic kit as defined in claim 1, characterized in that the last mentioned means includes a link and a lever, one end of the link being connected with the lever, the other end of the link being connected with said lid, and the other end of the lever being pivotally connected with the side wall of the box and connected with said vertically movable mechanism in the compartment.
