R. H. BURDGE COSMETIC CASE Filed March 29, 1937 INVENTOR:
ATTO RN EY,
Patented May 31, 1938 COSMETIC CASE Robert H. Burdge, Kansas City, Mo.
Application March 29,
10 Claims.
My invention relates to a case equipped with trays and one object is to provide a case of this character having a suitable number'of trays and means for simultaneously adjusting them outwardly to their respective positions where their contents will be readily accessible when the lid of the case, or a certain one of the trays, is opened, or automatically moved back into the case when the lid, or the certain tray, is closed.
A further object is to provide the case with a mirror connected in such manner to one of the trays that when the latter is moved outwardly it will automatically place the former ina convenient position for use.
For the purpose of illustration I have shown the case equipped with four movable trays, a mirror, and means for actuating said trays and mirror, and in order that the invention may be fully understood reference will now be had to the accompanying drawing, in which:
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of the case with the lid open, the movable trays adjusted outwardly, and the mirror tilted to a position where it may be conveniently used.
Fig. 2 is an enlarged section on line 2-2 of of Fig. l.
Figs. 3 and 4 are fragmentary sectional views showing certain parts of the invention.
Fig. 5 is a detail of a part of the mechanism for actuating the movable trays.
Referring in detail to the different parts, 2 designates the main or body portion of the case which has a lid 4 connected thereto by hinges 6. The forward lower portion of the case 2 is provided with a compartment 8 in which a tray or drawer I0 is slidably mounted. The upper portion of the case has a tray I2 connected by hinges I4 to a reinforcement I6 secured to the inner portion of the lid 4.
Suitable mechanism is provided for moving the trays Ill and I2 outwardly when the lid 4 is raised (Figs. 1 and 2) and inwardly when the lid 4 is closed. For example, I have shown, in the present instance, such mechanism in the form of a pair of connecting-rods I8 and a pair of levers 20. The connecting-rods I8 are pivoted at their ends to the tray I0 and the levers 20, respectively. The levers 20 are mounted intermediate their ends upon pivots 22 secured to a pair of partitions 24 spaced to provide compartments 28 at the ends of the case 2. The levers 20 extend upwardly at an angle through respective slots 28 in the top 30 of the case 2 and are pivoted at their upper ends to the tray I2.
In addition to the trays Ill and I2 and their 1937, Serial No. 133,694
actuating mechanism my invention contemplates the use of other trays and means for opening and closing them simultaneously with the opening and closing of said trays Ill and I2, as will hereinafter appear.
Each'connecting-rod I8 is equipped near its rear end with a hinge 32, or its equivalent, one leaf of which is connected by a pivot 34 to the respective connecting-rod. The other leaf of each spring 32 has one end of a link 38 pivoted thereto, the opposite end being pivoted to a hinge 38. The hinges 38 are connected to a pair of trays 40 having covers 4| and mounted on hinges 42 secured to the ends of the case 2, so that said trays 48 may be swung into the respective compartments'26, or swung outward to the positions shown by Fig. 1.
44 designates a. mirror having a flexible connection 48 at one end secured to the inner sur face of the lid 4, and connected at its opposite end to a foldable member 48 secured to a cover 5!], having a flexible portion 52 connected to the rear side of the tray I2.
' In addition to the trays and compartments above described, the case 2 may be equipped with other suitable trays and compartments. In the present instance I have shown a compartment 54 in the upper forward portion of the case and a removable tray 56 in the rear of said compartment 54.
In practice when the lid 4 is opened it lifts the tray I2 from the dotted line to the full line position, Fig. 2, thereby causing the levers 28 to swing on their pivots 22 and advance the connecting-rods I8 which in turn push the drawer I0 outwardly. As the connecting-rods I8 advance they actuate the links 36 which in turn swing the trays 48 outwardly to the position shown by Fig. 1.
Conversely, when the lid 4 is'closed it carries the tray I2 downwardly to the top 38 of the case 2. As the tray i2 descends it swings the levers 20 to the dotted line position, Fig. 2, so that they in turn will move the trays Ii] and 4!] inwardly through the intermediary of the connecting-rods I8 and the links 36. It is obvious that the lid 4 may be opened or closed and the trays I2 and 40 may be swung outwardly or inwardly by grasping the knob of the drawer II] and. opening or closing the same.
When the lid 4 is opened and the tray I2 is raised to the position shown by Fig. 2, the mirror 44 is tilted at a convenient angle for use as shown. When the cover 50 of the tray I2 is raised by hand to the position shown by Fig. 4
to permit access to the contents of the tray I2, the member 48 folds to the position shown and carries the mirror 44 backward against the inner side of the lid 4, in which position the weight of the mirror will hold the cover 50 in open position and thus leave both hands free to remove or place articles in the tray I 2.
If the trays 40 are swung to open position while the case 2 is resting upon a table or other support, the respective covers 4| may be lowered to the surface of such support and thus relieve the hinges 42 of a portion of the weight of said trays and their contents.
Should a more modest type of case be desired the trays 49 and the links 36 may be dispensed with, or the tray I2, the levers 20 and the mirror 44 can be left off. In the latter instance guides 42', or their equivalents, are provided to sup-. port the rear ends of levers 20 so that they will actuate the links 36 without binding.
From the foregoing description it will be understood that i have provided an attractive, compact and serviceable case whereby all of the trays excepting tray 56 may be simultaneously positioned by the opening of the lid 4, where their contents are readily accessible and whereby the mirror 44 is positioned at a convenient angle for use. Furthermore, it is to be understood that the case herein shown and described and the operations set forth are subject to such modifications as properly fall within the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is;
