DISPLAY BOX WITR INTERCONNECTED TRAY AND COVER Filed Oct. 9, 1950 Melvin L. Kramer INVENTOR.
BY MM 3% Patented Dec. 23, 1952 DISPLAY BOX WITH INTERCONNECTED TRAY AND COVER vMelvin L. Kramer, Newark, N. J., assignor to Melmar, Incorporated, Newark, N. J., a corporation of New Jersey Application October 9, 1950, Serial No. 189,189
1 Claim. 1
This invention relates to new and useful improvements and structural refinements in display boxes, more particularly, display boxes or containers for rings and other jewelry, and the principal object of the invention is to provide a display box of the character herein described, which includes a ring receptacle provided with a hingedly mounted cover, and a slidable tray provided under the receptacle to receive a gift card, or the like, and an important feature of the invention residing in the provision of means for operatively connecting the cover of the receptacle and the tray so that the cover is opened when the tray is slid outwardly and, conversely, so that the tray is slid inwardly when the cover is closed.
Some of the advantages of the invention reside in its simplicity of construction, in its efficient and dependable operation, in its pleasing and novel appearance, and in its adaptability to economical manufacture.
With the above more important objects and features in view, and such other objects and features as may become apparent as this specification proceeds, the invention consists essentially of the arrangement and construction of parts as illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the invention in its open position;
Figure 2 is a vertical sectional view thereof;
Figure 3 is a vertical sectional view, similar to that shown in Figure 2. but illustrating the invention in its closed position;
Figure 4 is a fragmentary sectional detail, taken substantially along the plane of the line 4-4 in Figure 3; and
Figure 5 is a fragmentary perspective view illustrating one of the hinge pins for mounting the cover on the base.
Like characters of reference are employed to designate like parts in the specification throughout the several views.
Referring now to the accompanying drawings and detail, the invention consists of a display box which is designated generally by the reference character [0 and embodies in its construction a hollow base l2 including a front wall M which is provided with a transverse slot IS, a portion of the front wall at the lower longitudinal edge of the slot affording what may be called a fulcrum l8, the purpose of which will be hereinafter described.
The upper portion of the base I2 is provided holder 22 for an article of jewelry such as a finger ring 24 which is to be displayed, and the display box also embodies in its construction an upwardly and downwardly swingable cover 26 for the receptacle 26, as shown.
If desired, a fabric insert 28 may be provided in the cover 26 so as to enhance the internal appearance thereof, and the cover itself is provided at the opposite sides and adjacent to the back thereof with a pair of downwardly projecting, integral arms 36. These arms are pivotally mounted on a pair of opposing hinge pins or pivot pins 32 provided at the rear, upper portion of the base [2, and it is to be noted that the base is formed adjacent the pins 32 with recesses 34 through which the arms 30 may swingably project into the interior of the base and thereby permit the cover 26 to be opened and closed.
A substantially flat tray 36 is slidable forwardly and rearwardly through the slot l6 and is provided at the inner end thereof with a pair of upstanding cars 38 carrying trunnions 46 which are pivotally connected to the inner ends of the respective arms 30.
The forward. end portion of the tray 36 is recessed so as to provide a seat 42 for a card '44 bearing a suitable inscription, and a pair of keeper strips 46 are provided on the tray at the opposite sides or ends of the seat 42, so as to assist in retaining the card 44 in position. However, the tray 36 may be formed with an opening 48 so as to facilitate removal of the card 44 by pushing the same upwardly, when so desired.
Finally, it is to be noted that a finger piece or knob 50 is provided at the front end of the tray 36 for pulling the same outwardly or forwardly from the box, which action will be transmitted by the arms 30 so as to automatically open the cover 26. Conversely, when the cover 26 is swung to its closed position, the arms 36 will automatically draw the tray 36 inwardly into the box, or on the other hand; when the tray is pushed inwardly in the box, the cover 26 will automatically close.
It is to be noted that the tray 36, including the keepers 46, is somewhat thinner than the height of the slot I6, so that the tray may rock upwardly and downwardly on the fulcrum l8, concurrently with its forward and rearward sliding action. In other words, as the trunnions 40 swing in an arc with the arms 30, the tray 36 will rock upwardly and downwardly about the fulcrum I8, which arrangement greatly simplifies the construction of the box since it eliminates the with a receptacle 20 to receive a conventional necessity of guiding the sliding movement of the tray in a straight line and utilizing intermediate linkage for connecting the arms of the cover to the tray.
It is believed that the advantages and use of the invention will be clearly apparent from the foregoing disclosure and accordingly, further description thereof at this point is deemed unnecessary.
While in the foregoing there has been shown and described the preferred embodiment of this invention it is to be understood that minor changes in the details of construction, combination and arrangement of parts may be resorted to without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed.
Having described the claimed as new is:
A display box of the character described, comprising a hollow base including a front wall provided with a transverse slot and affording a receptacle in the upper portion thereof, a portion of said front Wall at the lower edge of said slot constituting a fulcrum, a cover for said receptacle pivotally attached to the rear portion of said base for upward and downward swinging invention, what is movement, a rigid arm provided on said cover for swinging movement therewith and projecting into said base, and a tray slidable forwardly and rearwardly in said slot and pivotally connected at its inner end to said arm, said tray being of such thickness relative to the slot that it may rock upwardly and downwardly on said fulcrum inconcurrence with its sliding movement, said arm and said fulcrum constituting sole support means for said tray.
