This invention relates to improvements in folding or convertible tables.

One of the objects of this invention is to produce a table which may be folded into A compact form for carrying or storing purposes and which will provide drawer space for knives, forks and like table utensils.

Another object of the invention is to produce a table having closet compart-ments as well as drawer space.

Still another object is to produce a table which will be convertible into a relatively 'square box orcabinet in which a large part of the space may be utilized for closet or like compartments.

Still another object of the invention is to produce a device which may, while in folded or extended positions, be readily filled with articles which may be similarly removed either while the device is in folded or extended positions.

Still another object of my invention is to provide a relatively simple construction of v table which may be folded into a relatively small space; in which substantially all the space may be utilized for carrying of strong articles and which when in folded position may be finished to provide a cabinet which will have a neat and ornamental appearance. With these and other objects in view, the

invention comprises the combination of members and arrangement of parts so combined as to co-act and cooperate with each other in the performance of the functions and the accomplishment of the results hereinl contemplated, and comprises in one of its adaptations the species or preferred form illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which :-l Fig. l is a side elevation of a convertible table embodying my invention, the same being shown in extended position;

Referring now to these drawings, which illustrate a preferred embodiment of my invention, 1 and 2 respectively indicate two pairs of crossed foldable legs pivoted, as

Carried beneath the folding leaves 4, 4 and foldable therewith are rectangular drawer boxes or casings 7, 7 having end portions 7 a, 7", abut- 7 ting against each .other when the table is in extended position. lithin these drawer casings are mounted sliding drawers 8, 8 which may be provided with inclined partitions 8a, 8b to divide the drawer and permit different 80 portions'thereof to be used for dierent articles or utensils. It will be understood that the table is readily'movable from folded to extended position and when in extended position is locked at the middle portion so as to preventa folding movement thereof under pressure at the hinged portion. In the preferred embodiment of my invention, the table top is preferably so locked by a pair of radially-extend- 9G ing-,rods 9 pivotally mounted upon the pivot pins 8 and movable arcuately from alignment withv the upper portions of one pair of the legs when the device is folded to swing into a position intermediate the two pairs or sets of legs and to have its end engage the drawer casings or boxes 7, 7 beneath the hinged portion ofthe table top and thus to support and rigidly hold the table top in extended position.

The drawers are preferably provided with handles 8c and 8d and when in folded position, these drawers are lock-ed by latches 10, whereupon the handles 8c, 8d may be utilized to lift the device bodily so as to move it from one position to another.

In the preferred embodiment of my invention, I provide additional drawer or closet space which may be utilized for enclosing and carrying additional articles such as dishes,

knives and forks or other utensils for use in connection with the tabe and also provide means whereby my folding table and cabinet when in folded position will have a neat appearance and assume the form of asquare box* which will be completely enclosed at the front and back. With these ends in view, inV said preferred embodiment of my invention, I support on the pairs of legs below the pivotal point 3, closets or Compartment casings 11, 11 which, as shown, are provided with dividing partitions 12, 12 and have doors 13, 18 hinged at their lowerrends by hinges 14, 14 and latched at their upper ends by latches 15, 15. Obviously, the doors of these closets or compartment casings open rdownwardly and permit access to the interior compartmentstherein. The doors 13, 13', when the table is folded, are in the same plane as the bottom portions of the drawerboxes or casings and I am thus enabled to cause the folded table to assume substantially the shape of a rectangular box. In order to complete the box at the front and rear, I preferably mount above the doors of the casings 11, 11 filler Astrips 16, 16 which are so proportioned as to abut against each other when the table is in extended position and I also preferably hinge atv the upper ends of these filler strips 16, 16 supplemental filler strips 17, 17 so that when the device is in folded position, I amenabled to completely close the space at the front and rear between the drawer casings abovethe pivot and the closet casings below the same. These supplemental filler strips 17 are provided with latches 17a, 17b lso as to enable a latching of the same with the bottom of the drawer casing, and when such strips 17, 17 are so latched in place, the combined table and cabinet `will be locked in folded position.

As illustrated, the legs 1 and 2 are hinged at 1a, 2 to the side-extension portions of the leaves 4, 4 of the table top at the sides of l the drawer casings and the table top is preferably provided with depending side rails 4a, 4b which, upon the closing of the combined tablevand cabinet will have a width substantially (zo-extensive with the edge of the drawer and there will be provided between these side rails'or flanges da, di and the edge ofthe drawer, spaces or slots 11C, within which the upper portions of the folding legs 1 and 2 will move.k

' It will be seen that the casings below the pivots not only provide closet room but strengthen the construction and that the bottom edges 11n, 11b thereof will, with the lower ends 1b, 2b of the legs, form feet or bases for the combined table and cabinet in 7 both extended and folded positions, the bottom portions of the feet preferably being inclined in relation to the bottom portions of the closet casings for this purpose.

Having described my invention, I claim 7 1. A folding table embodying, in combination, a table top divided longitudinally into two sections and connected together by hinges intermediate the edges to enable the sections to be folded upwardly about the said hinges 8 into folded position and to be moved downwardly into extended position, a support for said table top hingedly connected near the corners of said sections and comprising two pairs of crossed legs, the members of each -5 pair being pivoted together intermediate the ends thereof, drawer casings permanently mounted on each of the hinged sections said casings having wall portionspositioned in the plane of the hinged edges of thetable top to reinforce the hinged tops and to act as a stopV therefor, upon extension of said top sections, and drawers slidably mounted in each drawer casing.

A folding table embodying, in combination, a table top divided longitudinally into two sections and connected together by hinges intermediate the edges to enable the sections to be folded upwardly about the said hinges into folded position and to be moved downwardly into extended position, a support for said table top hingedly connected near the corners of said sections and comprising two pairs of crossed legs, the members of each pair being pivoted together intermediate the ends thereof, drawer casings permanently mounted on each of the hinged sections said casings having wall portions positioned in the plane of the hinged edges of the table top to reinforce the hinged tops and to act as a stop therefor, upon extension of said top sections, drawers slidably mounted in each drawer casing, means for locking vsaid drawers within said casing, and handles on said drawers adapted to be used in lifting the table when the drawers are locked.

A convertible table embodying, in combination, a table top divided longitudinally into two sections and connected together by hinges intermediate the edges to enable the 1 sections to be folded upwardly about the said hinges into folded position and to be moved downwardly into extended position, a support for said table top hingedly connected near the corners of said sections and comprising two pairs of crossed legs, the members of each pair being pivoted together intermediate the ends thereof, drawer casings permanently mounted on each of the hinged sections to cause their rear ends .to abut each 1 other upon the extension of the table tops to reinforce the hinged tops and act as stops therefor, drawers slidably mounted in each drawer casing, closet oasings mounted on said crossed legs below the pivotal point thereof, said closet casings having the outer surface thereof arranged when the table is in folded position to lie in substantially the same plane as the bottoms of the drawer casings.

4. A convertible table embodying, in cornbination, a table top divided longitudinally into two sections and connected together by hinges intermediate the edges to enable the sections to be folded upwardly about the said hinges into folded position and to be moved downwardly into extended position, a support for said table top hingedly connected near the corners of said sections and comprising two pairs of crossed legs, the members of each pair being pivoted together intermediate the ends thereof, drawer oasings permanently mounted on each of the hinged sections to cause their rear ends to abut each other upon the extension of the table tops to reinforce the hinged tops and act as stops therefor, drawers slidabl)T mounted in each drawer casing, closet casings mounted on said crossed legs below the pivotal point thereof, said closet casings having the outer surface thereof arranged when the table is in folded position to lie in substantially the same plane as the drawer casings, and filler strips arranged between the outer surface of said closet casings and the drawer oasings.
