The invention relates to tables and more especially to adjustable leaf tables.
The primary object of the invention is the provision of a table of this character, wherein it can 5 be converted from a parlor, library or the like table into a dining room table, this being effected in an easy manner and by the operation of a lever so that the table has a dual purpose.
Another object of the invention is the pro-- vision of a table of this character, wherein a center leaf of the same is susceptible of being raised or lowered and when in lowered position affords a well or chamber within the table for the storage of foods, articles or the like such as 15 tableware, china, dishes, knives, forks, spoons, etc., and when storage has been made the same will be protected from dust or other foreign matter.
A further object of the invention is the pro- 30 vision of a table of this character, wherein the top is of two sections slidably fitted and are operated in unison, these sections being maintained at all times in true relation to each other, that is to say, on the shifting of one the other is auto- 25 matically moved and travels the same distance as the inner edges are held in true parallel relation to each other.
A still further object of the invention is the provision of a table 'of this character, which is simple in construction, thoroughly reliable and efficient in its operation, readily and easily adjusted, noiseless in the working thereof, strong, durable, the working parts being concealed from view so that the table when usable as a library or dining room table will be neat in appearance,
and also inexpensive to manufacture.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in the features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be 40 hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, which disclose the preferred embodiment of the invention and pointed out in the claims hereunto appended.

Referring to the drawings in detail, the table comprises a pair of legs 10 having therebetween and supported thereby a shelf II while at the tops of these legs is built a substantially rectangular shaped top supporting frame [2, including sides and ends, the ends being set into the inner faces of the legs Ill. Within this frame l2 spaced the required distance from the sides thereof are longitudinally disposed spaced parallel boards l3. Upon the frame I2 is a twopart top, the parts which are similar in size to each other being indicated at l5 and I6, respectively. At the under sides of the parts I5 and I6 are runners I! engageable with tracks [8 formed at the upper edges of the ends of the frame l2. These tracks are of T form and the parts l5 and I 6 can be moved inwardly or outwardly. When the parts l5 and I6 are moved inwardly they abut each other at the longitudinal center of the frame [2 and when moved outwardly they will project laterally beyond opposite sides of the said frame l2.
The boards l3 provide at the longitudinal center of the frame l2 a well or storage chamber l9 accessible when the parts I5 and I6 are moved outwardly away from each other. .Journaled in the frame l2 near the corners of the same are pulleys 20 having trained thereover a cable rigging 2| which have attached thereto brackets 22, these being secured in depending position to the runners IT. The purpose of the rigging 2| is that when one part l5 or [6 of the topis moved the other part automatically moves simultaneously therewith and the same distance with relation thereto. It is only necessary to manually shift one part of the top to effect movement of both parts thereof.
Vertically movable in the well or chamber I9 is a center leaf 23 for the table top, it having hinged at 24 thereto vertically swinging end extensions 25. The leaf 23 is fitted with guide members 26, these being adapted to travel in vertical slots 21 formed in the inner faces of the boards I3 so that the leaf when adjusted will move in a true perpendicular path.
The leaf 23 is supported on rubber rollers 28 carried by raising and lowering cranks 29 journaled in bearings 30 fixed to the frame I2 and these cranks have eccentric arms 3| pivoted to links 32, these being pivoted at 33 to a throw lever 34 swingingly mounted upon a pivot 35 fixed to one of the boards I3, the pivots 33 of the links 32 being disposed at opposite sides with respect to the pivot 35 of the throw lever 34. The lever 34 is located in the space between the board I3 carrying such lever and the side of the frame I2 next thereto. The lever 34 is accessible when the parts I5 and I6 of the top have been moved outwardly to open position. On shifting the lever 34 in one direction the leaf 23 will be raised to the same plane with the parts I5 and 56 of the top and thereby increases the size of the top of the table. On the leaf 23 reaching the plane of the table top the extensions 25 will have moved to the same plane of the parts I5 and I6 so that the gap or opening between the parts I5 and I6 when moved outwardly will be completely closed. These extensions 25 when the leaf 23 is in lowered position rest against the runners I? and are in a vertical position as will appear in Figure 4 of the drawings. The under side of the parts I5 and I6 of the top carry latching buttons 36 to fasten these parts together when moved inwardly in abutting relation to each other and when such parts are moved outwardly the extensions 25 can be latched by such buttons 36.
The lever 34 is engageable with clip-like stops 3?, these being upon the board I3 carrying the said lever and at opposite sides of its axis of movement.
Connected with the eccentric arms 3I of the cranks 29 at one side thereof is a coiled contractible spring 38 which functions to maintain the cranks 29 under tension.
The leaf 23 when in lowered position provides a bottom to the chamber or well I9 and in this space can be stored foods, articles or the like.
The table as before described is easy to open and close and when the top is open it is divided into two parts, these moving horizontally away from each other. In this motion the cable rigging 2! functions to have the edges of the two pieces always parallel with each other. By virtue of this fact the two pieces always retain their parallel position with respect to each other and can be opened and closed without binding. Moreover, the movement of the two pieces is so controlled that each is always the same distance from the center line of the table. Furthermore, when one piece is moved the other is caused to simultaneously move therewith. When the leaf 23 is raised to the same plane with the two pieces or parts of the top of the table, these create a continuous surface. When the leaf is lowered in the well or chamber I9, the latter provides a storage space.
What is claimed is:
1. In a table, a top having an intermediate vertically movable section and outer horizontally movable sections, the horizontally movable sections being connected with each other for the simultaneous shifting thereof toward and away from one another, the said outer sections when moved away from each other providing an opening in the top, the vertically movable section being adapted for disposition in the opening between the outer sections therewith, a frame beneath the top and affording a well at the opening in the latter for accommodating the intermediate section when lowered from between the outer sections, vertically swinging cranks pivoted to the frame and to said vertically movable section for raising and lowering the latter to between the outer sections and within the well, respectively, a vertically swinging lever movable through the opening in the top and pivoted at the well, and linkage between the cranks and the said lever for operation of said cranks when the lever is manually actuated.
2. In a table, a top having an intermediate vertically movable section and outer horizontally movable sections, the horizontally movable sections being connected with each other for the simultaneous shifting thereof toward and away from one another, the said outer sections when moved away from each other providing an opening in the top, the vertically movable section being adapted for disposition in the opening be tween the outer sections therewith, a frame beneath the top and affording a well at the opening in the latter for accommodating the intermediate section when lowered from between the outer sections, vertically swinging cranks pivoted to the frame and to said vertically movable section for raising and lowering the latter to between the outer sections and within the well, respectively, a vertically swinging lever movable through the opening in the top and pivoted at the well, linkage between the cranks and the said lever for operation of said cranks when the lever is manually actuated, the said lever being movable beneath the top and concealed by the outer sections thereof when together and also concealed when the intermediate section is between said outer sections,
and keepers at the well for the said lever.
3. In a table, a top having an intermediate vertically movable section and outer horizontally movable sections, the horizontally movable sections being connected with each other for the simultaneous shifting thereof toward and away from one another, the said outer sections when moved away from each other providing an opening in the top, the vertically movable section being adapted for disposition in the opening between the outer sections therewith, a frame beneath the top and affording a well at the opening in the latter for accommodating the intermediate section when lowered from between the outer sections, vertically swinging cranks pivoted to the frame and to said vertically movable sec- 3 tion for raising and lowering the latter to between the outer sections and within the well, respectively, a vertically swinging lever movable through the opening in the top and pivoted at the well, linkage between the cranks and the said lever for operation of said cranks when the lever is man ually actuated, the said lever being movable beneath the top and concealed by the outer sections thereof when together and also concealed when the intermediate section is between said outer sections, keepers at the well for the said lever, and a tensioning element connected with said cranks for maintaining the latter under tension.
