Application October 31,
3 Claims.
This invention relates to extension tables such as dining room and breakfast tables and it has for its primary object to enable the table top to be opened and closed in a uniform straight line 5 movement with a minimum of power and without skewing or jamming.
Another object of the invention is to provide an equalizer of simple and novel construction for an extension table to facilitate opening and closing the table top easily and with little effort.
And a further object of the invention is to provide an equalizer for the top of an extension table comprising few parts of simple construction adapted for attachment to the table top so that the power will be applied on one end of the table top and the resistance will be exerted on the other end of the table top in a straight line movement, in opening and closing the table top, whereby the operation of opening and closing the table top is facilitated and accomplished with a minimum of effort and the two parts of the table top are caused to move without skewing or jamming and into full contact with each other or with a filler or extension leaf inserted therebetween.
I have selected one type of breakfast table to illustrate my invention in the accompanying drawing and referring thereto Fig. 1 is a bottom plan View of the table in closed position and showing it without the filler leaf in full lines and with the filler leaf in broken lines;
Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view on the line 22 of Fig. 1; and
Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view on the line 33 of Fig. 1.
Referring to the drawing, the table frame comprises side rails 4, end rails 5, legs 6, corner brackets '7 and cross bars 8 secured together in any suitable way customary in table manufacture. The table top comprises two equal parts 9, 9 and a removable extension or filler leaf 10 which is stored in any suitable position under the table top, or elsewhere, and is adapted to be inserted between the two parts 9, 9' for enlarging the table. The table is provided with suitable guide and stop devices as is customary in extension tables. These devices may be made in the form of guide bars 11 fastened to the underside of the table top and provided with grooves to receive guide pins 12 on the side rails, and the side rails may be provided on their upper edges with grooves 13 to receive guide and stop pins 14 on the underside of the table top. The grooves have end walls 15 which are engaged by the pins 14 to limit the in and out movements of the table top parts.
1934, Serial No. 750,782
An extension lever 16 is pivoted at one end 1'7 to the top part 9' and is pivotally connected at its other end 18 to one end of a link 19 which is pivoted at its other end 20 to the top part 9. The lever 16 has a fulcrum bar 21 pivoted at 22 to the lever midway between its ends and also pivoted at 23 to one of the cross bars 8. This bar 21 provides a floating fulcrum for the lever 16 at 22 and facilitates the operation of the equalizer. The lever is pivoted at 1'7 and the link is pivoted at 20 preferably in the center line of the table so that in opening and in closing the table top the force will be applied at 20 and at 1'7 in a straight line and preferably in the center line of the table to move both parts 9 and 9 of the top uniformly, evenly and in a straight line.
The equalizer comprises only a few parts. It is simple in construction, it operates easily and with little effort and it causes the two parts of the table top to move toward and from each other uniformly and in a straight line, thereby avoiding skewing and jamming of the parts.
I have shown the invention embodied in a simple form in one kind of extension table and I reserve the right to embody it in other tables and to make such changes, alterations and modifications as may be necessary for this purpose, or for other purposes, within the scope of the following claims I claim:
1. An extension table comprising a frame, a table top having two parts slidably movable toward and from each other on the frame, an equalizer for causing one part of the table top to move relatively to the other part when force is applied to move the other part, said equalizer comprising a lever pivoted at one end to one part of the top, a link pivoted to the other end of the lever and to the other part of the top, and a floating fulcrum for said lever.
2. An extension table comprising a frame, a table top having two parts slidably movable toward and from each other on the frame, an equalizer for causing one part of the table top to move relatively to the other part when force is applied to move the other part, said equalizer comprising a lever, a link pivoted at one end to one end of the lever, the other end of the lever being pivoted to one part of the top and the other end of the link being pivoted to the other part of the top, both of said last mentioned pivots being in alinement with each other lengthwise of the table, and a floating fulcrum for the lever.
3. An extension table comprising a frame, a table top having two parts slidably movable toward and from each other on the frame, an equalizer for causing one part of the table top to move relatively to the other part when force is applied to move the other part, said equalizer comprising a, lever pivoted at one end to one part of the top,
5 a, link pivoted at one end to the other end of the lever and at its other end to the other part of the
