Filed Oct. 20, 1934 2 Sheets-Sheet 2 Inventor Attorney Patented Oct. 22, 1935 UNITED STATES Aram OFFICE 2 Claims.
This invention relates to extension tables and more particularly to an equalizer slide construction whereby companion sections or sides of the table top, can be simultaneously moved an equal 5 distance in opposite directions, thereby extending the table top to project an equal distance beyond the table legs, thus balancing the overhang.
The invention together with its objects and advantages will be best understood from a study of the following description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings wherein:
Figure l is a bottom view the extended position of the table top being indicated by dotted lines.
Figure 2 is a side elevational view and,
Figure 3 is a transverse sectional view through the table.
Referring more in detail to the drawings, 5 5 designates side and end strips of a table frame supported in the usual manner by legs 6. Mounted on the frame of the table is a top formed of companion sections or sides l and 8 respectively.
In accordance with the present invention the table top sections 1 and 8 are provided on their under side with opposed cleats 9 having on their inner faces longitudinal grooves I which accommodate guide pins II projecting laterally and outwardly from the side strips 5 of the table frame, whereby provision is made for holding the table top sections 'I and 8 slidable on the frame against undue movement in a vertical plane.
Further in accordance with the present invention the side strips in their upper edges are provided with longitudinal grooves I2 in which operate pins I3 depending from the under faces of the top sections 'I and 8, and which pins work in the grooves I2 in a manner to hold the table top sections 'l and 8 against undue lateral movement.
To eifect an equal adjustment of the table top sections 1 and 8, there is provided an equalizing bar or slide structure I4 that is pivoted intermediate its end as at I5 to a transverse brace bar I6 that extends between the side strips 5 of the table frame, and which is secured at its end to said side strips 5 by glued tennoned joints, or in any other suitable manner. On the top face thereof the bar I4 is providedk with spaced parallel longitudinal grooves I1 in which operate groove followers or pins I8 provided on the underside of the table top sections 'I and 8 adjacent the inner meeting edges of said sections. To permit easy rotative movement of the bar I4, and to provide proper clearance between the ends of the bar and the side members 5 of the frame said bar l-i has its ends rounded off in reverse direc- 5 tion as at I ta.
From the above described construction it will be obvious, that by reason of the barv I4 and the pin and groove connections between said bar and the table top sections 1 and 8, it will be obvious 10 that when either of the table sections 'I and 8 is pulled outwardly the other table top section will be caused to move outwardly in the opposite direction an equal distance to that of the manually moved section, and then an additional table leaf l5 (not shown) may be inserted between the separated companion sections 'I and 8 to provide an enlarged table top. A slide structure embodying the features of the present invention will be found practical and efficient in operation, economical, 20 and possessive of a life of long duration.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is:
l. An extension table comprising a frame, companion table topsections thereon, interengaging 25 means on each of said top sections and the frame for retaining the respective sections in sliding engagement with the frame and against movement in vertical and lateral directions, and an equalizer structure connecting said sections for transmitting movement of one section to the other whereby said sections will be caused to move an equal distance in opposite directions, said equalizer consisting of an equalizing bar pivotally mounted within the table frame, and provided with a pair of parallel grooves, and depending pins on the companion sections engaging in said grooves.
2. An extension table comprising a frame, companion table top sections mounted on the frame for adjustment thereon, a brace bar extending between opposed members of the frame, an equaliaer bar pivoted intermediate its ends on said brace bar and provided in its upper face with spaced parallel grooves, and depending pins on the table top sections at the meeting ends of the latter and engaging in the grooves in a manner to cause the companion top sections to move an equal distance in opposite directions when effecting an adjustment of the table top.
