Description
Oct- 15, Q D LANUM l E EXTENSION TABLE Ceci] LWMM Oct. 15, 1935. c, D. LANUM EXTENSION TABLE 2 Sheets-Sheet 2 Filed March 16, 1935 Patented Oct. 15, 1935 UNITED STTE PATENT oFFifcE 1 Claim.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in extension tables, and has for its primary object to provide a more satisfactory method of extending and supporting the leaves '.5 of a table of the draw end type, than any now in use.
In carrying out my invention, I provide two corresponding pairs of slides and mount two metal dowels in each slide in such a manner that one acts as a stop and the other supports the leaf upon the end rail of the table when in open or extended position. `I also provide guiding means at the center of the table for both pairs of slides and means for adjusting or elevating the end leaves l5 to insure a perfect fit between the co-acting lips at the outer edges of the stationary center leaf or section and the inner edges of the end leaves. Means are also provided at the inner ends of the slides to elevate the end leaves level with the 'center of the table when the former are opened or extended.
With the foregoing and other objects View Y that will appear as the nature of myl invention is better understood, the same consists in the novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts illustrated in the accompanying drawings and more particularly pointed out in the appended claim.
In the accompanying drawings, which are for illustrative purposes only and are therefore not drawn to scale:
Figure 1 is a bottom plan view of an end extension table, embodying my improvements.
Figure 2 is an end view, the legs partly broken away.
Figure 3 is a side elevation. Figure 4 is a vertical longitudinal section, taken on line 4 4 of Figure 1.
Figure 5 is a similar view, with one end leaf extended and the other end of the table broken away.
Figure 6 is a vertical transverse section, taken on line 6 6 of Figure 4.
Figure 7 is a detail horizontal fragmentary section, taken on line I I of Figure 6.
Figure 8 is a vertical transverse section, taken on line 8 8 of Figure 5.
Figure 9 is a similar view, taken on line 9 9 of Figure 8 and Figure 10 is an enlarged detail fragmentary sectional View.
Referring to the drawings for a more particular description of my invention, and in which drawings like parts are designated by like reference characters throughout the several views, the numeral I designates the side rails, 2 theV end rails,
3 the supporting legs, 4 the stationary center leaf or section and 5 and 6 the corresponding end leaves.
In carryingv out my invention, I provide the end leaf 5 with two corresponding parallel slides 1. 5v
which are disposed longitudinally of the table top and situated at opposite sides thereof, within the space between the sidefrails I. The end leaf 6 is also provided4 with `two corresponding longitudinally disposed slides 8, which are also disposed 10 at opposite sides of the table top, between and in parallel relation with the slides 'I. The slides 'l and 8 are suitably attached at their outer ends and upper edges, as at S, to the bottom faces of the end leaves 5 and 6, respectively, and each 15 slide is provided with a transverse horizontally disposed metal dowel pin I0', which is located at the free end of the slide and acts as a stop in limiting the outward movement of the corresponding end leaf and is further provided with a second 20 transverse horizontally disposed metal dowel pin It, which is located adjacent the center of the slide and serves to support the corresponding end leaf on the adjacent end rail when ,open or extended. The slides 'I and 8 pass through trans- 25 verse recesses I2 formed in the upper edge of the central transverse guide bar or member I3 and work against the opposite sides of the central vertically disposed dowel pins I4, .carried by said guide bar and extending into said recesses. 30 The end rails 2 are formed in their upper edges with transverse recesses I5 to receive the outer ends of the slides 'I and 8, and said recesses I5 are formed in turn with lateral extensions I6 to receive the outer projecting ends I6 of the dowel 35 pins I I. Said end rails are also formed in their upper edges with longitudinal grooves Il in which the projecting ends of the dowel pins I I rest when the end leaves are in' open or extended position, as will more fully hereinafter appear. The inner 40 or free ends of the slides 'I and 8 are provided on their bottom edges with elongated blocks or shoes I8 and I9, respectively, formed with beveled inner edges 28 and 2I. When the end leaves are opened or extended, as illustrated in Figure 5 45 of the drawings, the blocks or shoes I8 and I9 rest on the upper edge of the central guide bar or member I3 and raise or elevate the leaves on a level with the stationary center leaf or section 4. 50 Set screws 22 are mounted in corresponding vertical openings 23, in the upper edges of the end rails 2, directly beneath the projecting ends of the dowel pins II, and facilitate the adjustment of the end leaves in perfect horizontal alinement, 55
with the ends of the center leaf or section 4. The set screws 22 are formed with hollow hexagonal heads 24 and the bottom edges of the end rails 2 formed with vertical bores or openings 25 to facilitate the introduction and use of a hexagonal wrench (not shown) in adjusting said set screws.
In practice, the end leaves 5 and 6 are arranged in normal position ready for use, by rst withdrawing the same from retracted or closed position, as illustrated in Figure 4 of the drawings, until the projecting ends I6' of the dowel pins II extend entirely through the lateral extensions or recesses I6 of the openings I5 in the end rails 2, after which operation, the end leaves are raised and pushed back until the lips 26 formed at the upper inner edges thereof interlock with the lips 21 of the center leaf or section 4, and the projecting ends I6' of the dowel pins II rest in the grooves I1 in the upper edges of the end rails. The end leaves are thus supported on the end rails of the table and the inner ends of the slides 'I and 8 on the central guide bar or member I3 by the beveled blocks or shoes I8 and I9. Should any adjustment of the end leaves be required to bring their inner edges into perfect horizontal alinement with the outer edges of the stationary center leaf or section, this may be accomplished by adjusting the set screws 22 by means of a suitable wrench.
From the foregoing description taken in connection with the drawings, it is thought that the construction, operation and advantages of my invention will be readily understood without requiring a more extended explanation. 5
Having described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
In an extension table of the character specified,
a top comprising side and end rails, a stationary center leaf and adjustable end leaves, said end l0 rails formed with transverse ,openings having lateral extensions and with grooved upper edges,
a pair of slides carried by each end leaf and working through the transverse openings in the end rails, guiding means for the slides, means to 15 limit the outward movement of the slides, horizontal dowel pins carried by the slides and adapted to rest in the grooved upper edges of the end rails when the end leaves are in open or extended position, bevel blocks carried by the free ends 20 of the slides and co-operating with the dowel pins in supporting said end leaves on a level'with the center leaf and set screws mounted in the upper edges of the end rails directly beneath the projecting ends of the dowel pins when in groove 25 engaging position, for adjusting the end leaves in perfect horizontal alinement with the endsof the stationary center leaf.
