The invention forming the subject lmatter of this application relates to shelves, vand more particularly to a slidably supported eX- tensible shelf.
. An object of the invention is the provision of a slidably supported shelf consisting of two longitudinally telescoping sections" in which one of said sections is extensible beyond the end of the other of said sections.
Another object of the invention is the pro vision of a shelf consisting of two longitudinally telescoping sections, wherein one of said sections is slidably supported'in a frame and the other of said sections is slidably supported in said rst section, there being means for` limiting the sliding movement of said first section with respect to said frame and further means for limiting the sliding movement of said second section with respect to said first section.
A further object of the invention is the provision of a shelf of the character set forth which is highly useful and simple in construction. Convenience of arrangement, lightness and comparative inexpense of manufacture are further objects which have been borne in mind in the production and development of the invention.
With the foregoing and other objects in view, which will be made manifest in the following detailed description and specifically pointed out in the appended claim, reference is had to the accompanying drawing for an illustrative embodiment of the invention, wherein:
Fig. l is a plan View of the device shown mounted beneath a table top and in which a portion of the table top is broken away so as to more clearly illustrate the details of the shelf;
Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view of the device taken on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1; and
Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view of the device taken on the line 3 3 of Fig. l and shown on an enlarged scale.
Referring to the accompanyingV drawing wherein similar reference characters designate similar parts throughout, the reference numeral 5 indicats a shelf which is slidably supported on guides 6 disposed at the opposite longitudinal edges of said' shelf. In the present instance, the guides 6 are shownas being secured to the vertical sides 7 of a table 8 in such a manner that the shelf 5 is supported in a horizontal positionV directly beneatli a top 9 of said tablel andV is slidable thereunder. The shelf 5.oomprises two sections, a U shaped section 11 and a central section 12slidably disposed between the legs 13 of the said U shaped sectionv and extending therebetween forming a continuous flat upper surface. Sections 11 and 12 are of equal thickness so that both the top and bottom surfaces thereof are flush and form continuous fiat surfaces. 4
In order that the shelf section 12 may be slidably supported by the U shaped section 11, there is provided a substantially T shaped metalplate 14, the head 16 of which extendsV transversely across the bottom surface of the shelf 5 at the front end thereof and is secured yat its ends to the under sides of the opposite legs 13 by means of screws 17. The leg 18 yof the plate 1A extends centrallyl andlongi-A tudinally of the shelf, and is secured at its end to the under side of the base 19 of the U shaped section 11 by means of screws 21. Means are providedfor limiting the sliding outward and inward movement of the shelf 5. Said means comprise downwardly depending stops 22 formed integral with and on the opposite sides of the leg 18. Stops 22 are adapted to abut against the inside edge of a supporting stripA 23 which extends transversely across the under side of the shelf 5 and is secured at `its ends to the guides 6. It will be seen that the distance between the stops 22 and the inner side of the strip 23 will determine 4the distance thatthe shelf 5 maybe slidably extended from the table 8. 25 indicates a downwardly turned topV edge of the T shaped plate 14 which abuts against the outside edge vof the supporting strip 23and limits the inward movement of the shelf 5.
As has been hereinbefore stated, the shelf` section 12 is slidable within the U shaped section 11 and independently thereof, so that when the shelf 5 is drawn outwardly to the limit of its movement both of said sections 100 cooperate to form one shelf which may be further extended by 'drawing out the section 12 beyond the end of the section 11, as is clearly shown in dotted lines in Figs. 1 and 2. In order that the section 12 may be prevented from sliding completely out of the section 11, the same is provided at its end with projections 26 which extend transversely from the opposite longitudinal sides ofl said section. Numeral 27 indicates a ,slot cut into the inside edge of each of the legs 13 of the section 11 and forming an abutment 28 at the forward end thereof. The distance that the section 12 will project from the end of the section 11 is determined by the space between the extensions 26 Vand the abutments 28 at the time when section 12 is in closed position, as is clearly `shown in Fig. 1.
A further feature of the device is that when the shelf 5 is in its fully extended position the abutment 28 will be slightly outward from the adjacent edge of the table top 9, as is clearly shown in Fig. 1. Now when the section 12 has been fully extended, the projections 26 will engage the abutments 28 which limits the movement thereof so that a portion of the inside end of said section will lie partly under the table top 9, which prevents the two sections 11 and 12 from becoming disengaged.
The outer and inner edges of the section l2 are rounded as at 31, which when said section and the section 11 are fully extended, as is clearly shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1, allows the section 12 to be removed, which is accomplished by lifting the outer end of said section and drawing the vsame from under the table top 9 and from engagement with the abutment 28. Projections 32 similar to the projections 26 extend also from the opposite end of the section12, and are provided for the purpose of allowing both surfaces of said secf tion to be used.
The above mentioned parts are believed to adequately define my invention, and I will now proceed with a description of the operationL of the device. closed position is clearly shown in full lines in Figs. 1 and 2 as completely covered by the table top 9. When it is desired to slide the shelf into extended position it is merely necessary to grasp the outer end of the section 12 and pull outwardly thereon. This causes both of the sections 11 and 12 to slide outwardly, due to the fact that the frictional engagement between said sections is sufficient to cause the same to move as a unit until the desired to extend the shelf 5, the same is accomplished by sliding thesection 12 forward inthe section 11 until the projections 26 en- The shelf 5 in normal or j ther movement thereof, and, as has been heretofore stated, the said shelf assumes the position shown in dotted lines in Figs. 1 and 2. I am aware that many changes may be made in the general arrangements and combinations of the several devices and parts, as well as 1n the details of the construction thereof without departing from the scope of the present invention as set forth in the foregoing specification, and as defined in the following claim, hence I do not limit my invention to the exact arrangements and combinations of the said device and parts as described in the said specification, nor do I confine myself tothe exact details of the construction of the said parts as illustrated in the accompanying drawing.
' I claim:
`An extension shelf comprising a cabinet top, guides attached to the under surface of said top, a frame slidable in said guides and comprising a rear transverse member and two side members, a metal plate attached to the under surface of said frame, said side members having the inner surface stepped outwardly providing a wider space therebetween at the rearward end and a shoulder for cooperation with a shelf slidable between said side members and supported between said guides and said top, and depending lugs on said metal plate adapted to cooperate with a transverse member fixedly related between said guides and beneath said frame.
