TWILLIAM S. THOVIASON,

TABLE V/TH DETACHABLE TOP.
Application filed Becember 24, 1923.
To CLU fio/icm. it may concern.'
Be it known that l, VILLiAM S. Tiroir- AsoN, citizen of the United States, residing at Norfolk, in the county ot Nori il; and AState of Virginia, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Tables with Detachable Tops, otl which the following is a. speciiication` reference being had to the `accompanying drawings.
This invention rela-tes to tables, and particularly to what are i-:nown as pedestal ables which are used tor banquets `and in iotels and restaurants, the table being such that it may be readily taken apart. knocked down, and stored coinpactly.
The present invention particularly relates to means for holding the table top upon the pedestal )ortion ot' the table. and the general object ot thek invention is to provide very simple and effective means whereby the table top may be detachably connected with the pedestals, readily applied thereto, or as readily removed thcretrom,
A t'urther object is to provide means ot this character which is simple, neat, and which is not so evident as to destroy the ornamental effect et the table.
@ther objects will appear in the course ot the 'tollowing description.
lily invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure l is a top plan View ot a table constructed in accordance with my invention, showing in dotted lines the posit-ion ot' the longitudinally extending connecting rail ot' the table, the table top being partly broken awayv to show the pedestal and allied parts;
Figure 2 is an end View of the top and pedestal, showing the top before its full engagement with the pedestal;
Figure 8 is a. like view to Figure 2 but showing the top plate engaged with the pedestal;
Figure 4 is a vertical sectional View through the upper rail of the pedestal transverschv to the length thereof and through 'the table top, and showing the means whereby the table top and pedestal are connected;
Figure 5 is a face view ot the locking strip which is attached to the under face ot the table;
Figure 6 is a perspective view ot the adjustable bolt whereby the top and pedestal are connected.
leterring to these drawings, it will be seen that the. table top l0 is supported by means Serial No. 682,426.
ot two pedestals ll., both ot these pedest-als being alilte and both being proif'ided with a pair ot' legs l2, the` pedestals being connected to each other by means of a longitudinally extending bar i3 whose .connections to the pedestals is described and claimed in pending application for patent tiled .of even date herewith, Serial No. 682,429.
Each pedestal consists oi' the. two legs l2. a top cross bar le, and a lower cross bar l5 ,and a connecting' panel 16, though .obil'iously this arrangement may be changed in many v-.f'ays without departing trom the spirit et the invention. The cross bar 14 at opposite points adjacent the legs is longitudinally bored., as at l?, (see Figure et) the lower end ot this here being enlarged, at l8r. Disposed within and operating in this bore is th f bolt shown in Figure (5. The shank ot this bolt i9 circular in form but the yupper port-ion .ot the bolt is square in ross section, as vat 20, and provided with an enlarged head 2l. rlhe lower end ot the bolt is screw-threaded, as at 22, and operating;l in these screwfthreads is ya nut -23 having a lrnurled head 24. This nut above the louirled head is tormed with a circumferential recess which engages in the semi-circular recess 26 'formed in a holding` plate 27. This holding' plate 27 is attached by screws to the under face ot the rail 14. rl`he square portion 2O ot the bolt passes through a square opening 28 in a plate 29, and this plate 2S) is attached by screws to the upper face ot the rail lil. The plate 2T and the plate 2t) are both disposed in counter-sinks termed in the upper and lower edges ot the rail lll. lt will be seen that with this construction the nut 23 is swiveled within the plate 2l. and cannot move up and down and that, therefore, as this nut is turned, the shank 19 will be raised or lowered.
The table top l0, as shown in Figures 4 and 5, is provided on its under tace with a transversely extending metallic strip 30, this strip being channel-shaped in cross section and being held to the table top at intervals by screws 3l. This strip at two points is provided with the keyhole slots 32, the narrowest portion ot cach 'slot being large enough to receive the square portion 2O ot the bolt 19. while the widest portion of the slot is sui'iiciently wide to receive the head 2l.
ltfith this construction, it is obvious' that the table top is intended to he disposed upon the pedestal with the bolts within the widest portion of the keyholeI slot 32, and then the table top may be shifted laterally to carry the heads 21 into the narrowest portions of the slots 32, thus partially locking the table top tol the pedestals. After Athe table top has been slipped laterally into engagement with the bolts 20, the nuts 23 arevturned so as to draw the bolt 19 downward and clamp the table top firmly to the pedestals, thus making the table ready for use. It is obvious that by a reverse series of movements the table top may be disengaged from the pedestals and readily removed therefrom.
While I have illustrated certain details of construction and arrangement of parts which I have believed to be particularly effective, I do not wish to be limited thereto as it is obvious that many changes might be made in these details Without departing from the spirit of the invention' as defined in the appended claims. f
; I claim Y l. In a table, a table top, a pair of supporting members therefor, each including a transverse rail, each rail having a plurality of vertical bores, a pair of strips attached to the under face of the table top and extending transversely thereof, each strip having a plurality of keyholeslots therein, a plurality of locking bolts disposed in the bores of each of said rails, each bolt having a head, the head being adapted to be disposed in the keyhole slot and interlock therewith when the tabletop is shifted in one direction, and manually operable means as'- sociated with each bolt whereby the bolt may be longitudinally shifted in either direction and held in its shifted position to thereby permit theprojection of the heads of the bolts beyond the rails while the table top is being engaged with the bolts and the retraction of the bolts to hold the table top in engagement with the supporting members.
f2..v In a table, a table top, a pair of supporting members therefor each including a transverse rail, the rail having a vertical bore, a pair of strips attachedto the under face of the table top and extending transversely thereof, each strip having a plurality of keyhole slots'therein, a plurality of bolts disposed in the bores of each of said rails, each bolt having a squared portion and a head, the head being adapted to In testimony whereof I hereunto aiiix my signature.
