Patented Nov. 7, 19333 UNITED STATES STUDENT DESK George F. Reinhard, Grand Rapids, Mich., as-
signor to Standard School Fixtures Company,
Grand Rapids, Mich.
Application June 15, 1933. serial No. 675,893 l 10 Claims.
The main objects of this invention are;
First, to provide a studentstable or desk which is stable and at the same time may be moved freely about for positioning and which is unnecessary to be secured to the oor.
Second, to provide a double students desk having a substantial area and one in which separation is provided for the students using the table.
Third, to provide a Vstudents table which is very economical in its parts and in which the parts may be shipped in the knockdown and assembled by unskilled workmen and at the same time when assembled is very rigid and is difoult to disassemble without special knowledge of the structure. i Objects relating to details and economies of the invention will appear from the description to follow. The invention is dened and pointed out in the claims.
A structure which is a preferred embodiment of my invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which:
Fig. 1 is a front elevation of my improved students desk.
Fig. 2 is an end elevation `looking from the left of'Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is an enlarged fragmentary section on a linecorresponding to line 3-3 of Figs. 2 and '7.
Fig. 4 is a fragmentary section on a line corresponding to line fir-'4 of Fig. l.
Fig. 5 is a fragmentary section on line 5--5 of Fig. 4.
Fig. 6 is an inverted view! of the top unit with the drawer cabinet in assembled relation thereto, the pedestals and cross rails being omitted.
Fig. 7'is a fragmentary section on line 7-7 Vofliig. 3.
Referring to the drawing, the embodiment of my invention illustrated comprises a pair of end pedestals consisting of the horizontal ped pieces 1, uprights 2, and ioot pieces 3. The uprights 2 are arranged at the rear of the bed and foot pieces and are iixedly secured thereto, the connections, however, not being illustrated.
The pedestals constitute complete assembled units. These pedestals are connected by the longitudinal rail 4 which is disposed in the vertical plane of the pedestals. The rail is detachably joined to the pedestals by means of the dovetailed mortices or sockets 5 in the pedestals and the coacting dovetailed tongues or coupling members 6 on the ends of the rail 4. These joint members or couplings Vare engaged and disengaged by a vertical movement of the rail relative to form recesses or pockets receiving the upper edges of the bed members.` K
The top unit also has front and rear rim members 10 and 11 respectively. These are preferably iixedly and permanently secured to the top and constitute a; part of the top unit.
The cross pieces 9 and the bed pieces have aligned bores 12 for the dowel pins 13 which lock the top in assembled relation upon the pedestals and the top in turn locks the rail 4 in position. These dowell pins are inserted from the inside of the cross pieces so that they are not ordinarily visible.
.To facilitate their removal, the end pedestal members are preferably provided with bores 25 adapted to receive the slim rod or wire for drivving the dowel pins out of the bores 12 and thereby releasing the top. These bores 25 are relatively small and inconspicuous and, if observed, the purpose thereof is not self-evident.
I provide a drawer cabinet unit consisting of a box-like cabinet l5, the front rim member 10 being cut away at 14 to receive this cabinet, as l shown in Fig. 1. The cabinet illustrated is designed to receive a pair of drawers 16 having vertically disposed handles 1'7. Pencil racks 18 are provided within the drawers which are designed to constitute book trays. The cabinet is provided with stops .19 limiting the outward movement of the drawers or trays.
The drawer unit is supported by means of the front angled brackets 21 which are secured to the sides of the cabinet and have laterally projecting arms which engage recesses 22 provided therefore in the front top rim member 10, these recesses opening at the rear edge of the rim member.
The rear end of the cabinet is supported by means of the angled hangers 23. which are secured to the sides of the box and have rearwardly projecting arms resting on the top of the rail 4. Y
With the parts thus arranged, the cabinet is assembled with the top unit as shown in Fig. 6 prior to the placing of the `rail upon the pedestals and with the parts thus arranged and the top assembled and secured to the pedestals, it is very diicult to remove the cabinet. The brackets are secured tothe drawer cabinet by means of rivets so that it is quite impossible to disioo Y coupling tongues at assemble the drawer unit without practically destroying it until after the top has been removed, and as stated, the top securing means is not obvious on a casual inspection.
I have not attempted to illustrate certain changes and modifications which may be made in the details of constructionI and rdesign of the above specifically described embodiment of my invention as it is believed that such changes will be readily understood from this disclosure.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by YLetters Patent, is:
