UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE GABINET TABLE James L. Bnntin, Napton, Mo.
Application September 15, 1947, Serial No. 773,987
1 Claim.
This invention relates to improvements in cabinet tables.
a An object of the invention is to provide an improved cabinet table with .a slidable telescoping table surface supported upon a plurality of rollers for being selectively withdrawn from the cabinet when it is to be used, and which may be teiescoped within said cabinet when the table surface is not to be used.
Another object of the invention is to provide an improved cabinet table including an outer cabinet housing having a permanent top and a plurality of drawers disposed beneath and in spaced relation from said top, and an extendable table surface mounted between said cabinet top and the uppermost drawer, the same being roller supported and having means for locking the table surface in its extended position.
A further object of the invention is to provide an improved cabinet table having a roller supported and guided telescoping table surface, together with means for limiting the outward movement of the table surface, and means for locking said table surface in its extended position.
Another object of the invention is to provide an improved cabinet table which will be highly efficient in operation, and relatively inexpensive to manufacture and produce.
Other objects will appear as the description proceeds.
In the accompanying drawings which form a part of this application:
Figure 1 is a front elevation of the improved cabinet table;
Figure 2 is a side elevation of the improved cabinet table being partly broken away and in section, showing the table surface in telescoped position;
Figure 3 is a similar view to Figure 2, but showing the table surface in its extended position;
Figure 4 is a detail sectional view taken on the line 4-4 of Figure 3;
Figure 5 is a perspective view of the table surface in upside-down position;
Figure 6 is a perspective view of the U-shape table surface supporting frame, and
Figure 7 is an enlarged vertical sectional view of one of the table surface supporting rollers.
Like characters of reference are used throughout the following specification and the accompanying drawings to designate corresponding parts.
In carrying out the invention, there is pro- 2 vided a cabinet housing generally designated by the reference numeral I, being preferably formed of metal.
The cabinet housing i is provided with opposite ends 2, a back 3, a top 4, all of which may be made integrally.
Disposed in the cabinet housing 1 and spaced below the top 4, are three superimposed drawers 5, B and i for containing any desired articles or the like.
In the space between the cabinet top 4 and the upper drawer 5, is a space in which the table surface generally designated by the reference numeral 3 will be telescopically received. The table surface 8 is substantially rectangular in shape, being formed with a transversely extending depending trim strip 9, and is further pro vided with the rearwardly extending parallel guide strips Ill having oppositely extending flanges I l and 12 on their upper and lower edges respectively. The flanges H are apertured to receive attaching screws R3 for securing the guide strips ID to the bottom of the table surface 8.
A pair of latch members M and 15 are pivotally mounted upon the offset supports 16 on the lower flanges E2 of the guide strips W, and are arranged so that their outer ends are received in apertures ll formed through the forward portions of the opposite ends 2 of the cabinet housing I when the table surface 8 is in extended position for locking and holding said table surface secure. Forwardly extending rods I8 and I9 are secured to the inner ends of the latch members I4 and I5, and connect with an eye 20 in the rear of a pull latch actuating rod 2| slidably supported in the spaced angle members 22 and 23. A coil tensioning spring 24 is disposed about the latch actuating rod 2! for normally holding said rod in retracted position. The front end of the rod 2! extends through the trim strip 9 and supports the handle knob I00 upon its outer end.
These rollers 25, 26 and 2'! are mounted upon the outer surfaces of the guide strips [0, being supported upon the axle bolts 28.
A C-shaped guide track 29 is secured to the inner surface of each end 2 of the cabinet housing I for supporting rollers hereinafter described.
A U-shape table surface supporting frame is provided and comprises a back rail 29 having a reinforcing rib 30 formed thereon, and a pair of forwardly extending parallel side rails 3| and 32.
The side rails 3| and 32 are formed with vertical slots 33 and 34 at their forward ends, and support the C-shape guide tracks 35 which are welded at 36 to the inner surfaces of said side rails 3| and 32 for receiving and supporting the rollers 25, 26 and 21 mounted upon the guide strips [0.
Three rollers 31, 38 and 39 are supported upon the axle bolts 40 secured to the outer surfaces of said side rails 3| and 32, and have rolling engagement with the C-shape guide tracks 29.
A stop pin Al is secured to the inner wall of one end 2 of the cabinet housing I and is engageable with the back rail 29 when the table surface 8 is in extended position to limit its outward movement. In this position, the latches l4 and IE will be disposed in the locking apertures H in the ends 2 of the cabinet housing I. Inverted L- shape bracing arms 2 and 43 will be pivotally mounted at their lower ends upon the pivot pins G4 at the lower front edges of the cabinet housing 5 adjacent the ends 2 thereof. Bearing pins 55 will be supported by the rear upper ends of the bracing arms 12 and 43, and will be slidably disposed Within the vertical slots 33 and 34 in the forward ends of the side rails 3i and 32 of the U-shape supporting frame.
In operation, When the table surface 8 is pulled out to its extended position, there will always be at least two of the three rollers 25 and 21, and the two rollers 38 and 39 which will be supported by the C- shape guide tracks 29 and 35.
When it is desired to close the table surface 8, it-is only necessary to pull outwardly upon the knob l 33 on the forward end of the latch releasing and actuating rod 2! to withdraw and release the latch members I4 and 15 from their keeper slots ll, whereupon the top surface 2 may be completely telescoped within the cabinet housing 1, at which time the pins t5 will be positioned in the upper ends of the vertical slots 33 and 34 in the U-shape supporting frame side arms 3| and 32.
Trim strips 4'! and 43 will be supported on the front edges of the bracing arms 32 and 43 to provide a flush and even front surface for the cabinet housing I.
From the foregoing description, it will be apparent that there has been devised and provided a highly efficient form of cabinet table having an extendable table surface which will normally be collapsed within the cabinet when not in use, and which will be relatively inexpensive to manufacture and produce.
While the preferred embodiment of the instant invention has been illustrated and described, it will be understood that it is not intended to limit the scope of the invention thereto, as many minor changes in detail of construction may be resorted to without departure from the spirit of the invention.
Having described the invention what is claimed as new 1s:
A cabinet table including a housing having a top, opposite ends and a back, drawers disposed in said housing with the uppermost drawer in spaced relation from said top, a table surface slidably and telescopically received in the space between said top and drawers, rollers supported by said table surface, a free floating U-shape table supporting frame slidably positioned between said rollers and the ends of said housing, guide tracks supported by said table supporting frame and by said housing ends, the rollers on said table surface being supported in the guide tracks on said table supporting frame, rollers on said table supporting frame supported in the guide tracks on said housing ends, vertical slots in the side arms of said table supporting frame, L-shaped bracing arms pivoted at their lower ends to the opposite ends of said cabinet, pins carriedat the upper ends of said arms received in said slots, and rollers carried at the corners of said brace arms engaging the edges of said guide tracks on said housing ends and serving as locking devices to prevent the supporting frame from moving inwardly until the table has been sufficiently telescoped as to make the supporting frame unnecessary.
