[Class 52 (iii).] The end leaves are supported on runners the inner ends of which have means for raising a centre leaf or leaves when extending the table. Fig. 2 shows a plan of a table consisting of two movable ends 3, 4 between which may be set two loose leaves 5, 6, Fig. 1, one on each side of a transverse bar 7 forming part of the table top. The ends 3, 4 are mounted on slide bars 14.. 17, on the underside of each of which is a thin plate 18.. 21 of gunmetal &c., which act as guide members and as means for raising and supporting the extension leaves 5, 6. The bars 14 . . 17 move in guides formed by bars 22, 27, 23, 25, 28, 26, and the plates 18, 19, 20 move in slots 24. To extend the table, the end 3, say, is drawn away from the central bar 7, and in the first few inches of its movement the plates 18, 19 pass under bars 36 on the underside of the leaf 5, raising it. The end 3 may then be pushed in, the dowels in the various parts engaging in the usual way, and the inner edge of the leaf 5 resting on the step 8 of the centre bar 7. Additional guide-plates 29 .. 32 resembling the plates 18, 19, 20 are attached to the inner ends of the slide bars 14 .. 17. In the return movement of the end 3, the plates 18, 19 pass through channels in the sides of the bars 36, and eventually slip over and under spring plates 40 on the rounded ends of these bars into position ready to lift them again.
