(Cl. 312-223) The present invention relates to vanity cabinets of that type wherein the cover carries one or more illuminating mediums for a mirror attached to the cover of the case. The cover is relatively heavy and involves certain problems as to safety and in its automatic actuation of closing means for the circuit leading to the illuminating lamps when the cover is raised, and these and other difiiculties are overcome by means of the present invention.

The invention will be described with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which:

Fig. 1 is a sectional elevation showing an embodiment of the invention, the section being taken generally on the line 1-1, Fig. 2, but the cover member being unbroken;

Fig. 2 is a front elevation with the casing broken away;

Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section taken on the line 3-3, Fig. 4;

Fig. 4 is a transverse section taken on the line 4-4, Fig. 3;

Fig. 5 is an enlarged fragmentary section taken on the line 55, Fig. 3;

Fig. 6 is a detailed view, partly in section, showing the safety cylinder and piston cushioning member for restraining abrupt drop of the cover member.

Referring to the drawings, I have shown at 1 a box-like casing within which is a receptacle 2 dividing the sides of the easing into chambers 3 which extend at the sides of the receptacles 2.

The casing has a rear ledge or platform 4 hinged at 5 to a cover member 6. The inner face of the cover member carries a mirror 7. At each side of the mirror 7 is a tubular lamp bulb 8 held at top and bottom by the bracket supports 9, which supports also carry the lamp shields 10.

Carried by the cover member 6 at each side thereof is a downwardly extending rigid arm 11 having a V- shaped end 11x. When the cover is moved upwardly to the position of Fig. 1, the V-shaped ends of arms 11 are snapped into the seats of catch members 12, and when the cover is moved to closed position the V-shaped end of one of the arms 11 actuates a switch break finger 13 of the switch 14 adapted to break the circuit (not shown) through lamps 8.

Pivoted to the V-shaped end of one of the arms 11, and as shown in Fig. 1, is a piston rod 15 which leads Within a cylinder 16, the rod carrying a piston 17, Fig. 6. The cylinder is provided with one or more air apertures at 18, so that when the cover is raised there will be no counter-force against the piston in its outward movement. Also the cylinder rearwardly of the piston may be provided with a very small relief opening 19. By such means, abrupt drop of the cover is prevented when it is moved downwardly with release of its latching element with the catch 12, and at the same time the cushioning force is controlled.

The tops of the chambers 3 at the sides of the compartment 2 are closed when the cover 6 is raised, and by closure members which are opened by the lamp supporting elements when the cover is closed. For such purpose two cover members are mounted at 21 each on a rod bearing the said number 21, the rods rotating in brackets 22, and the rods being spring loaded as by the springs 23, Figs. 1 and 2. Thus the mechanism within chambers 3 is concealed when the cover is raised with its mirror and lamps for use.

It will be understood that various modifications may be made in the form and arrangement of the elements constituting the embodiment herein described without departing from the spirit of the invention.

Having described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is as follows:

1. A vanity cabinet consisting of a box-like casing, a cover hinged to said casing, a mirror carried by the inner face of the cover, a lamp at each side of the mirror, vertical walls within the casing and bounding a central compartment and two narrow compartments, one at each side of the central compartment, an arm depending from the cover, a catch held within one of the narrow compartments and adapted to engage and hold said arm when the cover is raised, a normally open switch for a circuit leading to the lamps, and a switch closing member in the path of and engaged by said arm when the cover is closed, a piston rod within said one narrow compartment and pivoted to the arm, a cylinder within said one narrow compartment, a piston within the cylinder and carried by said rod, one end of the cylinder being pivoted to the wall of one of said narrow compartments, two reversely movable cover members at the top of each narrow compartment within the path of engaging and cover-opening abutments carried by the inner face of the cover, and spring means for normally moving said reversely movable cover members to closed position.

2. A vanity cabinet consisting of a box-like casing, partially closed at its top by a ledge covering a rear casing space, a cover hinged to said ledge, a mirror carried by the inner face of the cover, lamps carried at the sides of the mirror, vertical walls within the casing and bounding a central compartment and two narrow compartments, one at each side of the central compartment, a switch for a circuit leading to the lamps, an arm depending from the cover at its inner face and having an extension leading within one of said narrow compartments, said extension having a V-shaped bend therein, a catch member within one of the last named compartments and having a channel portion for seating said V- shaped bend when the cover is raised, and a circuit breaking member in the path of and engaged by said V-shaped bend of the arm when the cover is closed.

3. A vanity cabinet consisting of a box-like casing, a cover hinged to said casing, a mirror carried by the inner face of the cover, a lamp at each side of the mirror, vertical walls within the casing and bounding a central compartment and two narrow compartments, one at each side of the central compartment, an arm depending from the cover, a cylinder within said one narrow compartment and pivoted at one end to the wall thereof, a piston rod within said one narrow compartment and pivoted to the outer end of the arm, a piston within the cylinder and carried by said rod, said cylinder and piston rod being movable between a substantially horizontal position when the said cover is closed, and an inclined position when said cover is open, two reversely movable cover members at the top of each narrow compartment within the path of engaging and cover-opening abutments carried by the inner face of the cover, and spring means for normally moving said reversely movable cover members to closed position.
