ILLUMINATED MIRROR CABINET Filed Dec. 20, 1952 IN VEN TOR.
BY 144W,
Patented May 4, 1954 UNITED STATES TENT OFFICE lGlaim. 1;
This invention relates to illuminated wall cabinets and more particularly to illuminated wall cabinets having a mirror. Modern medicinewall cabinets are disposed in a bathroom wall flush with the wall surface. Such cabinets are generall illuminated by an overhead light so that good illumination of the sides of a persons head of a person standing before the mirror is substantially an impossibility.
It is an object of this invention to provide an illuminated wall cabinet having vertically disposed lights on both sides of said mirror and adapted to disappear into the wall surface.
It is a further object of this invention to provide a mirror containing wall cabinet having lateral swingable panels adapted to illuminate an object disposed before said mirror.
It is another object of this invention to provide a wall cabinet having disappearing lateral lights which ar illuminated simultaneously with the appearance of the lights.
These and other objects of this invention will become apparent upon reading the following descriptive disclosure taken in conjunction with the drawing in which Fig. 1 is a front View of the medicine cabinet broken away in part to show the mechanism for swinging open a pair of electric light carrying panels disposed on the sides of the mirror,
Fig. 2 is a view taken on line 2-2 of Fig. 1 and showing the side panels in their Open position,
Fig. 3 is a sectional view taken substantially on line 2--2 with the bottom of the medicine cabinet broken away to show the means for opening both side panels simultaneously and with the lighting of the side panel lights, and
Fig. 4 is a view of a lever arm supporting block.
Referring to the drawing a wall cabinet is provided with a swingable mirror I disposed over the medicine cabinet and two vertical side brackets 2 and 3, disposed on the left and the right sides respectively of the mirror. The side brackets have a quadrant shaped cross section and consist of two panels disposed at right angles. Thus bracket 2 has an outwardly disposed panel l secured to an inwardly disposed panel 5 at substantially a right angle and similarly bracket 3 has an outwardly disposed panel B secured to an inwardly disposed panel 7 also substantially at a right angle. Disposed between said panels 4-5 and panels t-l' in each of said brackets is an illuminating light bulb 8, preferably of the fluorescent tube type. A quadrant cylindrical panel 9 preferably of glass or plastic is disposed about each side light bulb.
According to this invention both brackets are swung open simultaneously and the light bulbs length. by means of lights that may be caused to disappear, giving the entire wall cabinet a substantially planar. flat appearance.
The Wall cabinet has a front panel I!) having vertical rectangular apertures on each side of the mirror and adapted to receive panels 4 and 6. A right angled bracket H is secured interiorly of panel 10 adjacent the outer lower corner of the rectangular aperture and is adapted to pivotally support bracket 2. Similarly angle bracket I2 supports bracket 3. Furthermore, left top angle bracket 13 is adapted to pivotally engage the top of bracket 2 and right top bracket i l pivotally engages the top of bracket 3.
A right-angled leg bracket 15 is secured to the bottom of panel 5 adjacent the bottom pivot point of bracket 2, and similarly a second right-angled leg bracket i6 is secured to panel 1 adjacent the bottom pivot point of bracket 3. The laterally projecting segments of leg brackets l5 and I6 are provided with apertures to receive a pivot pm.
In accordance with this invention the brackets 2 and 3 are swung open simultaneously by means of an arrangement of levers wherein a pivoted hand-operated bottom lever I! which is provided with a depending handle extending through a slot in panel 23 and is made to operate a centrally pivoted top plate 19, which is adapted in turn to operate a pair of lateral bars 20 and 2|.
The lever I1 is pivoted on a rear pivot pin 22 to the base panel 23. The forward end of lever H is pivoted on pin 24 which pin is also secured to plate IS in an over-sized aperture. Lever I! is provided with a centrally disposed curvatured slot 25. Plate i9 is centrally and pivotally disposed on a stud pin 25 which is fixed to panel 23.
Plate is is provided with both a rear curvatured slot 21 having its curve disposed to the right, and also with a front curvatured slot 28 having its curve disposed to the left. A pivot pin 29 is disposed in slot 2? and secured to right lateral bar 2!, and similarly a pivot pin 38 is disposed in slot 2-? and secured to the left lateral bar 20.
Each of the bars 28 and 2i are slidingly mounted on slide blocks 31 beneath holding clamps 32 secured to said blocks by screws or in any other conventional manner. Slide bar 2! is provided with a switch plate 33 secured thereto and which slidingly forces leaf spring 34 to close electric switch 35 thereby turning on the lights 8 simultaneously with outward movement of brackets 2 and 3. The outer extremity of bar 2| is pivoted to one end of a link 36, the other end of link 36 being pivoted by means of a pivot pin to the aperture in leg bracket 16. In like manner, the outer extremity of bar 20 is pivoted to one end of a link 37, the other end being pivoted by means of a pivot pin to the aperture in leg bracket 15.
In operating the wall cabinet to dispose brackets 2 and 3 outwardly, the lever handle I8 is moved to the right (Fig. 3), thereby Causing bar 2| to move to the left and bar 20 to move to the right which operation in turn swings brackets 3 and 2 outwardly at the same time, While simultaneously switch plate 33 acts on spring 34 to operate switch 35 thereby turning on lights 8.
This invention has been described by means of an illustrative embodiment but it is not to be limited to this embodiment but rather only by the claim appearing herein.
Having described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is as follows:
A mirror holding Wall cabinet having a base panel with an arcuate slot therein, comprising pivoted side brackets having illuminating lights and provided with leg brackets secured thereto, a hand operated horizontally movable plate lever having a depending finger grasp piece disposed in said slot of said base panel, said lever being pivoted to said base panel, having a curvatured centrally disposed slot therein, a top longitudinal plate piece journaled on a stud passing through the curvatured slot of said hand operated plate lever, said top plate piece having curvatured slots disposed adjacent each of the ends thereof, a pair of studs disposed adjacent the ends of said lever and disposed in the respective slot of said top plate piece, a plurality of support pillars disposed on both sides of said lever and secured to said base panel, a pair of slide bars horizontally disposed on both sides of said top plate on top of said pillars and pivotally connected to the respective slots of said top plate. and links disposed between the outer extremities of each of said slide bars and said leg brackets, whereby movement of said hand lever efiects movement of said slide bars with simultaneous pivoting of said side brackets.
