Description

Aug. 17, 1937. w. E. GREENE COLLAPSIBLE TOOL CABINET UNIT Filed Feb. 27, 1936 Patented Aug. 12, 1937 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE 4 Claims.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in a collapsible tool cabinet unit.
The invention has for an object the construction of a unit as mentioned which is characterized by a flat vertical member supporting a tool cabinet, a drawer cabinet, a motor driven buffer and emery wheel. and a work table.
More particularly, it is contemplated to so arrange the various parts that the flat vertical member may comprise the door of a closet or other similar element. When thus constructed. the tool cabinet is inconspicuous and at the same time convenient to be used when desired.
A further object of this invention is to arrange the table board adjustable so that it may be extended outwards when used and moved flat against the vertical member when not used.
Still further the invention proposes to arrange a door for closing the tool cabinet and to provide a mechanism for automatically moving the table board up to the horizontal working position when the door of the cabinet is opened.
Another object of this invention is to arrange a movable light upon the flat vertical member so.
that proper illumination may be had when the device is being used.
For further comprehension of the invention, and of the objects and advantages thereof, reference will be had to the following description and accompanying drawing, and to the appended claims in which the various novel features of the invention are more particularly set forth.

Fig. 1 is a perspective view of a closet door used in conjunction with the collapsible tool cabinet unit according to this invention.

The collapsible tool cabinet unit, according to this invention, includes a flat vertical member ill, which prefe ably, I be a door of a closet,
with various cabinet units and tools mounted on the upper portion of the vertical fiat member ID. This tool cabinet is provided with a door i2 which is hingcdly mounted at one side so that it may be opened, as clearly shown in Figs. 1 and 2. Within the cabinet there are a plurality of clamps i3 which support a plurality of tools l4.
Beneath the tool cabinet i i a drawer cabinet i5 is moun-cd and attached to the flat vertical member Hi. This drawer cabinet includes a plurality of horizontal partitions i6 supporting a plurality of drawers il. These drawers may be used to store and hold nails. screws and other small objects. A motor driven buffer and emery wheel I8 is mounted upon the vertical member in bencaih the drawer cabinet it. A table board i9 is hingedly mounted at one side upon the vertical member ID and is adapted to be moved up to a horizontal position, as shown in Fig. 2, or down to a vertical position as shown in Fig. 1. A means is provided for holding this table board in the vertical position. It comprises a pair of collapsible arms 20 at each of the sides of the table board connected between the extremities of the board and the vertical member ID. Each of these arms comprises an upper arm section 20- and a lower arm section 20 pivotally connected in such a manner that in an aligned position of the arms they may be moved to a position so that they no longer can pivot. This is accomplished by a square projection 2| from the lower end of the arm 2i) engaging through an opening 22 in the upper end of the section 20.
The opening 22 has a circular portion 22 at the top connecting with a lower square shaped portion' 22 The square projection 2i is provided with a large head 23 which is capable of extending over the opening 22 so that the parts are slidably and pivotally connected. The upper ends of the arm sections 20' are pivotally connected with the outer end of the table board IS. The lower ends of the arm sections 20 are pivotally connected on brackets 23 mounted on the vertical member iii.
A means is also provided for automatically raising the table board i9 to the operative horizontal position when the door I2 0! the tool cablnet is opened. This means comprises an arm 2| projecting from the hinge edge of the door i2 and adapted to swing in an arcuate path as the door i2 is opened and closed. A link 28 is hingedly connected with the outer end of the arm 26 and loosely connects with the upper arm 21 of a bell crank 21 which has a lower arm 21''. This lower arm has a slot into which a pin 28 extends.
2 The pin II is mounted on a rod 18 which extends downwards and is slidably supported by engaging through bearings in the back oi the drawer cabinet I! and in the base oi the motor driven bufler II. At the lower end rod 20 has rack teeth 28 which mesh with a small pinion 30 listed on a shaft 3i which is rotatable in a support bracket 32 mounted on the vertical member ID. This shaft II is pinned to a lug 36 mounted on the rear edge of the table board it.
when the door I! is opened the bell crank 21 will be pivoted so that the rod 20 is moved downwards which will turn the pinion 30 to move the table board it upwards. when the table board reaches the horizontal position it automatically is locked into this position by reason of the square projection 2i engaging into the square opening 22, immediately upon releasing oi the door II. In order to reclose the door l2, or lower the table board I, it is necessary that the table board be slightly raised so that the projection 2i engages in the opening 22- and then the arm sections 20 and 20" may be pivoted to prevent the projection 2| from re-engaging in the opening 22*. The arms Il and ill may now move downwards and assume the dot and dash position indicated in Fig. 3.
An electric plug It is mounted upon the vertical member ID and is wired (not shown on the drawing) to a lamp II on a plvotally mounted arm I. The plug 88 may be connected with a conventional house circuit to illuminate the lamp. Since the arm 48 may be pivoted, the lamp may be placed in advantageous positions when the device is used.
While I have illustrated and described the preierred embodiment of my invention, it is to be understood that I do not limit myselt to the precise construction herein disclosed and the right is reserved to all changes and modifications coming within the scope oi the invention as defined in the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new. and desire to secure by United States Letters Patent is:-
1. A collapsible tool cabinet unit, comprising a hat vertical member, a tool cabinet mounted thereon and having a hinged door, a table board hingedly mounted on said member and adapted to normally depend, means for raising said table board to the horizontal position operated by the opening of said door, and means for latching said table board in the horizontal position, said latter means comprising a pair of hingedly connected arms connected at their outer ends with the table board and with said flat vertical member and at their inner ends being provided respectively with a square rod on one of the parts engaging in a keyhole slot in the other of the parts.
2. A collapsible tool cabinet unit, comprising a flat vertical member, a tool cabinet mounted thereon and having a hinged door, a table board hingedly mounted on said member and adapted to normally depend, means for raising said table board to the horizontal position operated by the opening oi said door, comprising a support bracket mounted on said vertical member, a pinion rotatably supported on said bracket, a rod having rack teeth upon its lower end engaging with said pinion, and means ior connecting said rod and hinged door to lower said rod when said door is opened and so raise said table board when said cabinet is opened.
3. A collapsible tool cabinet unit, comprising a flat vertical member, a tool cabinet mounted thereon and having a hinged door, a table board hingcdly mounted on said member and adapted to normally depend, means for raising said table board to the horizontal position operated by the opening oi said door, comprising a pinion coaxially mounted with relation to said hingedly mounted table board, a rod having rack teeth upon its lower end engaging with said pinion, and means for connecting said rod and hinged door to lower said rod when said door is opened and so raise said table board when said cabinet is opened.
4. A collapsible tool cabinet unit, comprising a list vertical member, a tool cabinet mounted thereon and having a hinged door, a table board hingedly mounted on said member and adapted to normally depend, and means (or raising said table board to the horizontal position operated by the opening of said door, comprising a pinion coaxially mounted with relation to said hingedly mounted table board, an arm extending from the edge oi said door, a link connected at one end with the outer end of said arm, a bell crank pivotally mounted on the side wall oi said cabinet, one arm of said bell crank being connected to the other end oi said link, a rod having one or its ends connected with the other arm oisaid bell crank, and the other end oi the rod having rack teeth engaging said pinion to move said table to the operative position when said door is opened.
