GEORGE STOCKER, OF PASADENA, CALIFORNIA.
TRUNK.
Application filed October 24, 1910.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Gnonon STocKnR, a citizen of the United States, residing at Tasadena, in the county of Los Angeles and State of California, have invented a new and useful Trunk, of which the following is a specification.
The main object of the present invention is to provide a trunk with movable tray means in the upper portion thereof which are operated automatically on opening the trunk to provide for access to the interior of the trunk.
A further object of the invention is to provide in a trunk of this character, additional garment receiving means lying normally alongside of the said movable tray means and exposed for use when the tray means is operated in opening the trunk.
Other objects of the invention will appear hereinafter.
The accompanying drawings illustrate the invention, and referring thereto:
Figure 1 is a perspective of the trunk in opened condition. Fig. 2 is a transverse section of the trunk in opened condition. Fig. 3 is a transverse section of the trunk in closed condition. Fig. 4 is a section on line 0:*:c in Fig. 2.
The trunk 1' is provided with a lid 2 hinged thereto as at 3, the upper edge of the trunk body 1 being preferably inclined upward and forward, as at 1 and the lower edge of the lid 2 being correspondingly inclined so as to form an inclined joint when the lid is closed, the purpose of this inclination being to reduce to a minimum the height of the front wall 5 of the lid, so as not to interfere with the operation of the tray means. The trunk body 1 is provided with a socket 4c for receiving a lock member 7 hinged to the lid 2 and adapted for operation by a key 7, said member 7 being adapted for use as a handle for lifting the lid.
A member 6 extends longitudinally in the trunk at the rear portion thereof from end to end of the trunk, said rear member serving as a rear support for thetray means when in elevated position and also serving as a garment container. For the latter purpose said member 6 is made hollow and contains any desired number of drawers or receptacles 8 which slide thereinto. The tray 9 is adapted to slide horizontally on this member 6 and to descend into the space between the member 6 and the front of the body 1, being Specification of Letters Patent.

Serial No. 588,890.
guided in its movement by pins 10 on said tray slidably engaging in horizontal grooves 11 in a bar or guide member 12 secured at its rear end to the member 6 and extending horizontally forward therefrom with its front end bent down an secured to the front body, the grooves or ways 11 in said member 12 being correspondingly bent down at their forward ends, as shown at 11, this descending portion 11 being nearly vertical but preferably having a slight inclination to the vertical to enable the tray to descend more readily into position in front of the member 6. Stops or ledges 18 are provided at each end of the trunk body, forming supports on which the tray rests when lowered into position in front of the member-6. Said member 9 is operated by links pivotally connected at 15' to the lid 2 and pivotally connected to the tray at the lower portion thereof, say at about the mid width, so
that when the lid of the trunk is raised it will draw said tray upwardly and rearwardly.
The trunk is used as followsi When the lid of the trunk is fully opened, as shown in Fig. 2 the tray 9 is drawn by the links 15 to rearmost position in which it lies on top of the member 6, and is removed from the space in front of the member 6, thereby providing for access to the interior of the trunk body or main clothes compartment, indicated at 16, to the drawers or receptacles in member 6 and to the tray 9. When the trunk top or lid is moved to closed position, shown in Fig. 3, the links 15 push the tray 9 forwardly over the member 6, the pins 10 thereon riding in the guide-ways 11 until they reach the descending portion of said guide-ways, whereupon said tray drops bodily to the position shown in Fig. 3, wherein it rests on the end ledges or stops 18. In dropping to this position, the tray is not subjected to any substantial tipping action, the approximately vertical portion 11 of the guide-ways providing for descent of the forward portion of the tray simultaneously with the rear portion thereof.
What I claim is:
A trunk comprising a body a member extending at the upper rear portion of said body, leaving a space between said member and the front of the body, guide means extending forwardly from said member and having downward extensions at their forward. ends at each end of said space, said guide means being fastened to said member and to said body, a tray mounted to slide over said member and provided with means slidably engaging said guide means to guide said tray into and out of position between said member and the front of the trunk body, a lid hinged to the rear wall of the trunk body and links pivotally connected to said lid and to said tray for moving said tray into and out of position within the 10 trunk body as the lid is lowered or raised.
In testimony whereof, I have hereunto set my hand at Los Angeles, California, this 17th day of October 1910.
