\r l e/ U.S. Patent Nov. 25, 1975 GARBAGE BIN HAVING MEANS FOR SUSPENDING GARBAGE SACKS WITH OPEN MOUTHS My present invention relates to a garbage bin having means for suspending an open-mouthed sack from the top of a rack which is withdrawable from a cabinet.
In accordance with this invention, I provide the cabinet with an upright wall opening giving access to an internal compartment which accommodates the aforementioned rack, the latter having a front panel closing that opening in a retracted position. A rectangular horizontal frame mounted on the rear surface of this panel, near the top thereof, has front and rear members parallel to the panel surface and side members transverse thereto. The front and rear members form upwardly open front and rear channels traversing the side members for receiving bent-over front and rear portions of the mouth of a garbage sack suspended within the frame, with lateral mouth portions draped about the side members. A lid hinged to the rear member, rearwardly of the rear channel, is swingable about an axis above the bottom of this rear channel and has flanges bracketing the side members as well as an edge of the front channel in a swung-down position.
The above and other features of my invention will now be described in detail with reference to the accompanying drawing in which:
FIG. 1 is a side view of a garbage bin according to my invention with a drawerlike pull-out rack extracted from a cabinet in an open position;
FIG. 2 shows the same side view of the garbage bin with the pull-out rack partly retracted;
FIG. 3 is a front view of the garbage bin; and
FIG. 4 is a top view of the bin in the open position of FIG. 1.
In the drawing, numeral 1 designates a box-shaped cabinet as is often used as part of a built-in kitchen combination. The cabinet is equipped with a drawerlike pull-out rack, which essentially consists of a drawer 2 and a front panel 3. The panel 3 normally closes an upright wall opening of the cabinet giving access to its interior. On the top of the front panel a horizontal frame 4 of rectangular outline is fixed to its rear surface for the suspension of a garbage sack 5. The frame 4 has four members, i.e. front and rear members 6, 7 parallel to panel 3 and transverse side members 8, 9. On the outside of each of the two side members 8 and 9 a flap 10 is hingedly mounted on a pintle 11. These flaps serve to engage lateral portions 5 of the mouth of a garbage sack which are draped about the top edges of the frame members 8 and 9. Frame 4 is carried by a bracket 12 mounted on front panel 3. On the rear frame member 7 opposite member 6 and bracket 12 there are bearings 13 in which a lid 14 which can be swung down to cover the frame opening, is hinged. The lid 14, has fixed thereto one end of a flexible link, such as a chain 15, which is anchored to a fixed point 16 inside the cabinet 1 at its other end. Bracket 12 and bearings 13 are designed so that between them and the frame members 6, 7 there are channels 17 and 18 to accommodate front and rear portions of the sack mouths which are bent or folded over the top edges of the members 6 and 7. The hinge axis of bearings 13 lies above the bottom of the adjoining rear channel 18. On its underside the bracket 12 has lugs 19, tapering downwards, with bearings 20 open toward the middle of the frame. These bearings serve to hold the core 21 of a magazine roll 22, which consists of a number of garbage sacks in a continuous strip 23 separated by perforated lines and wound onto core 21. The front panel 3 of the rack 2, 3 has fixed thereto a supporting bracket 24, preferably vertically adjustable and at a distance from frame 4 corresponding approximately to the length of a garbage sack. On pulling the rack 2, 3 out of the cabinet 1, at a certain point in its travel the link 15 becomes stretched so that further pulling causes the lid to be lifted from frame 4, uncovering its opening so that garbage can be dropped into the rack 5 suspended therefrom.
Of particular importance is the fact that the lid 4 opens to the rear, toward cabinet 1, and not to the front.
In the drawing I have also shown an ordinary drawer 24 fitted in the cabinet above rack 2, 3.
It will be noted that channels 17 and 18 traverse the side members 8, 9 of frame 4 to preserve the continuity of the bent-over portions of the sack mouth draped about the upper edges of members 6 9. As best seen in FIGS. 2 and 3, flanges 14a, 14b, 14c oflid l4 bracket the side members 8, 9, as well as the edge of front channel 17 formed by member 6, in the swung-down position of the lid.
What I claim is:
1. A garbage bin comprising:
a cabinet provided with an upright wall opening giving access to an internal compartment;
a pull-out rack slidably mounted in said compartment for extraction from said cabinet, said rack having a vertical front panel closing said opening in a retracted position of the rack a rectangular horizontal frame mounted on a rear surface of said front panel near the top thereof, said frame having front and rear members parallel to said surface and side members transverse thereto, said front and rear members forming upwardly open front and rear channels traversing said side members for receiving bent-over front and rear portions of the mouth of a garbage sack suspended within said frame with lateral portions of said mouth draped about said side members; and
a lid hinged to said rear member rearwardly of said rear channel for swinging about an axis above the bottom of said rear channel with flanges bracketing said side member and an edge of said front channel in a swung-down position.
2. A garbage bin as defined in claim 1 wherein said side members are provided with external flaps engageable with said lateral portions.

Claims (2)

1. A garbage bin comprising: a cabinet provided with an upright wall opening giving access to an internal compartment; a pull-out rack slidably mounted in said compartment for extraction from said cabinet, said rack having a vertical front panel closing said opening in a retracted position of the rack a rectangular horizontal frame mounted on a rear surface of said front panel near the top thereof, said frame having front and rear members parallel to said surface and side members transverse thereto, said front and rear members forming upwardly open front and rear channels traversing said side members for receiving bent-over front and rear portions of the mouth of a garbage sack suspended within said frame with lateral portions of said mouth draped about said side members; and a lid hinged to said rear member rearwardly of said rear channel for swinging about an axis above the bottom of said rear channel with flanges bracketing said side member and an edge of said front channel in a swung-down position.
2. A garbage bin as defined in claim 1 wherein said side members are provided with external flaps engageable with said lateral portions.
