CHAMFERING-MACHINE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 276,927, dated May 1, 188 3. Application filed October 30,1882. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern;
Be it known thatI, THOMAS ToBIN, of Sioux Falls, in the county of Minnehaha and Territory of Dakota, have invented certain new and usefulImprovementsinOhamfering'Machines and I do hereby declare that the followingisa full,clear,andexactdescription of theinvention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, and in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved chamtering-machine, showing it in position in the head of a keg or barrel; and Fig. 2. is a perspective detail view of the adjusta. ble bearing-brace used in conjunction with the 1 chamfering-knife or cutting-tool.

Myinvention has relation to machines or implements for chanifering kegs or barrels; and it consists in the detailed construction and combination of parts of the same, as hereinafter more'fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, the letters H represent the staves of a barrel, the ends of which form the chine, D, which is to be chamfered.
A is the chamfering-knife, which is fixed upon or made in one piece with a curved arm, A, having at one end atstraight handle, a, and at the other enda handle, a, set at right angles to arm or bar A. This bar is inserted through a bearing-block, and may be fixed therein in any given posit-ion by a set-screw,
F. The under side of block E has a pivoted stud, B, forming the center of the circle described by the knife, the radius of which corresponds to that of the barrel-head to bechamfered. The bearingbracket is composed of three parts-via, the body-plate I, the hinged bar K, and the screw L. The part I has two parallel flanges, '5 17, at one end, and a head or enlargement, l, at the opposite end, which has a screw-threaded bore or aperture, through which works the screw L. The latter has a square head, L, terminating in a point, L The bar K is hinged at the outer end of part I, between its flanges i 6, its projecting outer end iorming a pointed fork, K. The reduced end of this bar is of such a width that it will fit between the side flanges, i while its rear end is enlarged to the full width of plate I.
The latter has a series of small cup-shaped depressions or recesses, m, which register with apertures a in arm K when the parts K and I are folded down upon each other, as shown in Fig. 1.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the drawings, the operation of my machine will readily be understood. The bearing-bracket is placed diametrically in the open end or head of the barrel, as shown in Fig. 1, its position being adjusted by means of the screw, (which may be turned by means of a spanner or wrench placed over its square head L,)so as to bring either one of the series of holes a m in the exact center of the barrel. The pivotal stud B is then placed in the appropriate center hole, at m, and the position of the knife is adjusted to bring it exactly over the chine, as shown in Fig. 1, when bar A isfastened in its slotted block E by means of the set-screw F, and the knife is drawn around along theinner edge of the chine by its handles a and a.
By hinging the bar K to the end of bar I in the manner shown and described, its long arm will form a lever, by depressing which the points K and L will be forced into the staves on the inside of the barrel with considerable power and bind the device firmly in place, so as to resist the pressure of the chamferingknife and its appurtenances.
Having thus described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States- 1. The combination of the bar A, having knil'eA and handles a a,slotted block E, having the pivotal stud B, and set-screw F, with the supporting-bar, substantially as and for the purpose herein shown and described.
2. The combination of the plate or bar I,
