Animal Clipping Machine. No; 239,978. Patented April 12,1881.
WITNEQSBS: INVENTOR:

N. PETERS. PHDTO-LITHOGRAPHER. WASHINGTONv 01V.
UNITED STATES PATENT ()FFICE.
ERNEST W. NOYES, OF BAY CITY, MICHIGAN;
ANIMAL-CLIPPING MACHINE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 239,978, dated April 12,1881.
' Application filed July 31, 1880. (Model) To all whom it may concern:
Be. it known that I, ERNEST WILLIAM NoYEs, ofBay City, in the county of Bay and State of Michigan, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Clipping Machine Heads, of which the following is a specification.
Figure 1. is a plan view of the improvement. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section. Fig. 3 is a cross-section taken through the line w m, Fig. 2.
Similar letters of reference indicate corre sponding parts.
The object of this invention is to furnish heads for clippingmachines so constructed that they can be applied to any part of the animal, which will avoid the necessity of an attendant to hold up the feet or legs of .the animal being operated upon, and which shall be simple in construction convenient in use, and not liable to get out of order.
The invention consists in combining, with the handle, the knives running parallel with the handle, and the driving-shaft, of the cylinder having a cam-groove, and the bar having a pin to engage with the said cam-groove,
whereby the knives will be vibrated by the,
revolution of the shaft, as will be hereinafter fully described.
A represents the lower or stationary knife, and B the upper or vibrating knife, which knives are held against each other by screws 0, passing through short longitudinal slots in the knife B, and entering screw-holes in the knife A. Washers D are interposed between the screw-heads and the knife B to take the wear. Projections E are formed upon the knife A, which pass through the slots of the knife B, to serve as guides to the knife 13, to form longer screw-holes for the screws 0, and to prevent the knife B from being clamped by the screws 0. The inner end or shank of the knife A is beveled upon its side edges, and is inserted in a dovetailed groove in the lower side of the small cylindrical case F.
In the inner end or shank of the vibrating knife B are formed one or more holes to receive a pin, G, attached to the rabbeted outer end of a short bar, H, which works upon the shank of the knife A and in a slot in the lower side of the case F.
To the inner side of the inner part of the bar H is attached a pin, I, which has a tubular washer, J, placed upon it to prevent friction. The pin I enters a cam-groove, K, in the cylinder L, formed upon or attached to the shaft M. The cylinder L fits into and works in the cavity of the case F, and by its revolution vibrates the knife B. The shaft M and cylinder L are swiveled to the case F by the tube N, the end of which, or a flange or head formed upon the said end, screws into the end of the case F. I
Upon the tube N is placed a hand-piece, 0,
of such a size and shape as to be conveniently grasped and held by the hand of the operator when using the machine, the case F, tube N, and hand-piece 0 thus forming the handle of the clipping-machine head. The outer end of the shaft M is designed to be connected with any suitable driving mechanism by a flexible shaft or other suitable means.
The knives AB are made with cutting-teeth upon both side edges, so that the cutting can be done at either side and forward or backward without any change or adjustment of the machine, and without changing the position of the clipping-head or of the hand that holds it.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
. In a clipping-machine head, the combination, with the knives A B, the handleF N0, and the shaft M, of the bar H, having pin I, and the cylinder L, having cam-groove K, substantially as herein shown and described, whereby the knife B will be vibrated by the revolution of the shaft M, as set forth.
ERNEST WM. NOYES.
