GEo'EGE w. TALLMAN,
PATENT. GEEICE.
OF NEW YOBK, N. Y.
IMPROVEMENT IN CLIPPING DEVICES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 196,724, dated October 30, 1877; application filed 'August 25, 1877.
To all whomt may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE W. TALLMAN, of New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Clipping-Machines; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this speciiication, and to the letters' and figures of reference marked thereon.
Figure 1 of the drawings is a representation of a longitudinal vertical sectional view of my clipping-machine. Fig. 2 is a plan view, auch Figs. 3 and 4 are details thereof.
The nature of my invention consists in the construction and arrangement of a clippingmachine, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
The annexed drawing, to which reference is made, fully illustrates my invention.
A represents a hollow handle, formed with a casing, B, at the front end, the whole being bisected longitudinally, and the two parts fastened together by screws at c a a. C C represent the stationary knives, fastened to the bottom of the casing B by screws or otherwise. D is the movable knife, turning upon its pivot at b. Within the casing B the inner end of the knife D forms an oblong or eccentric eye, D', within which works an eccentric, E, secured upon a short shaft, d, as shown. This shaft also carries a bevel-wheel, G, which gears with a larger bevel-wheel, G', upon the end of a shaft, H, that passes longitudinally through the handlev A.
By the revolution of the shaft H the proper motion is thus imparted to the knife D for (utting against both the stationary knives At the inner end of the handle A is swiveled a hollow head, I, formed with a tubular projection, e, on one side,.and on this projection is swiveled another hollow Ahead, J, as shown.
The shaft H extends into the head I, and is provided with a gear-wheel, K, that meshes with a similar wheel, K', on a shaft, L. This latter shaft passes through the projection e into the head J, where, by means of gears B B, it connects with a shaft, O, from whence the power and speed are obtained, said shaft O being rotated by any suitable means. f
It will readily be seen that by taking hold of the handle the cutters can be turned in any desired direction and operated, the swiveled heads forming, as it were, a universal joint.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In a clipping machine, the combination, with the hollow handle A and casing B, of the stationary knives C C, pivoted knife D, formed with the eye D', eccentric E, with the shafts and gear-wheels for rotating the same, and the swiveled heads I J, substantially as described, and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
