Description

l. C. M0 0 RE.
" Stave-.Iointers No. 146,838.
Patented 14h. 27,` 18742; Y
UNITED STATES JAMES O. MOORE, OF OURDSVILLE, KENTUCKY, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF HIS RIGHT TO JOHLT E. LUOKETT, OF SAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT IN STAVE-JOINTERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 146,838, dated January 27', 1874; application filed April 18, 1873.
` To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES C. MOORE, of Curdsville, in the county of Daviess and in the State of Kentucky, have invented certain new and usefullmprovements in Stave-Jointer;
and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specification.
The object of my invention is to furnish in stave-jointing machines a simple and reliable method of retaining the stave in proper posi- 7 tion with relation to the knife or cutting-tool,
whereby the joint may be readily cut into the proper shape; and it consists in the construetion and arrangement of the several parts of the machine, as more fully hereinafter set forth.
Referring to the drawings hereto annexed, in which similar letters indicate correspondy. ing parts in the different figures, Figure lis a front view of the machine. Fig. 2 is a plan view, showing the arrangement of the staveclamp and the devices for operatin g it. Fig. 3 is an end view of the machine, and Figs. 4 and 5 are top and bottom views of the cuttingtool.
A represents the outer or adjustable jaw of the staveclamp, hinged at a to the stationary' jaw A'. B B are adjustable iron guides, rest- .ing upon the iiexible guide-supports C O, and
jaw A. By means of a rotary movement im D, the stave may be gaged to any required thickness. The movable jaw A is operated by means of the handle F, acting through the lever G and rod H. Upon drawing the handle forward, the clamp is opened for the reception of the stave, which, resting on the stops c c, is then, by a backward movement lof the handle, grasped rmly between the jaws, the latter being afterward held in position by a project-ion or catch on the handle F pressing into the ratchet d. The stave being now securely supported in the clamp, the requisite bilge and bevel may be given to its edge with the knife or cutting-tool. This knife is so constructed that the cutting part, which works in the space between the guides, may be removed when worn, and another substituted therefor` Its under surface is also provided with a notch or groove on each side of the blade, so thatit may be tted upon and slide easily along the guides, by which means itis always retained in proper position. j
Havin g thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. The adjustable guides B D and support ing-pieces O O, with their adjusting-screws, in combination with `the adjustable jaw A` and stationary jaw A', as and for the purpose set forth.
2. The adjustable jaw A, in combination with the rod H, lever Gr, and adjusting-handle l?, with its holdingratchet d, as and for the pur pose specified.
