Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ALFRED BROWN, OF OTTAWA, ONTARIO, CANADA, ASSIGNOR OF ON E-HALF TO WM. EDWARDS BROWN, OF SAME PLACE.
WAISTBAND ATTACH MENT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 261,664, dated July 25, 1882. Application filed February 13, 1882. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALFREnBRowN, of the city of Ottawa, in the county of Carleton, in the Province of Ontario, in the Dominion of Canada, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement-in Pantaloon-Waistband Attachments and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same.
The object of this invention is to tighten the waistband of pantaloons over the hip or hips of the wearer by the elasticcontraction ofa buttoning attachment, whereby suspenders will not be required.
1 My invention consists of a strap composed of an elastic material united to an inelasticmaterial at the ends, and subdivided midway by an inelastic material, the inelastic port-ions provided with button-holes to button on the waistband of the pantaloons, eitherat the back or front or at the hips of the wearer, whereby the strap is formed into elastic divisions, each division contracting the waistband by drawingin the material of the garment, so as to avoid large gatherings, and whereby the strap will be kept from curling transversely when in use.
Figure 1 represents a view of my improved strap attached to the pantaloons at the hip.
0 Fig. 2 is a view of the strap attached to the back of the pantaloons. Fig. 3 is a diagram of the strap detached.
A A are the end sections of the strap, provided with button-holes B to attach it to the waistband by buttons, either at the hips or back or at both hips and back, according to the requirements of the wearer. These sections are cut slanting or inclined at a, which causes the attachment to turn inward at or over the hip-bone, and thereby prevents the pantaloons slipping down, and at the same time contracts the material of the waistband.
U is a central section of inelastic material, provided with a button-hole, D, at top, to fasten by buttoning on the waistband of the pantaloons. p
E E are elastic sections of the strap, out slanting on one side to match the slant of the sections A, whereby when the parts are stitched together a diagonal seam is formed from the upper to the lower edges of the strap.
The ends of the sections E are seamed to the central section, D, which, being rigidly buttoned to the waistband, is not afiected by the elasticity of the sections E. Thereby the elasticity of the strap-sections is subdivided, and each section performs its officeindependently, so that the gathers between the ends of strap are distributed throughoutits length or taken in, and, being equally divided, large and loose 6o gatherings prevented, and the waistband outside the strap draws the pantaloons smooth around the wearer, thus contributing to the efficiency of the strap, which, being attachable by buttons or other suitable fastenings, is readily removed.
Heretofore in fastening pantaloons by rigid or elastic straps, without the central section,
,0, and its fastening, the material of the waistband gathered in large folds, which would slip below the strap, and thereby become uncomfortable to the wearer, besides being more or less ineffective when in use.
My improved strap being fastened at intervals to the waistband, all possibility of large or loose gatherings is avoided, as each section will only take in material according to the extent o'fits elasticity, and the waistband will be drawn so as to compress the material at or over the hips, and thereby retain the panta- Icons without the use of suspenders, and the sections being being cut diagonally, the tendency of the strap to curl is removed.
I claim as my invention- 1. An elastic strap or removable attachment to the waistband of pantaloons, consisting ofinelastic ends, a central inelastic portion, and elastic sections attached intermediately to the inelastic portions, substantially as shown and described, said inelastic por- 9 tions being provided with button-holes orother con trivances for securing the strap to the garment, substantially as and for the purpose set forth. v
2. An elastic strap for removable attachment to the waistband of pantaloons, consisting of elastic portions E, the inelastic section 0, and the inelastic end sections, A A, cut slanting at a, substantiallyas and for the purpose set forth.
- ALFRED BROWN. Witnesses:
